This is quite an interesting discussion!
When I taught pre-service Ts (1997 - 2012) for secondary math methods we did some theory such as Piaget, van Hiele, plus some cognitive demand research, and the rest was readings from NCTM journals (mostly written by math ed profs but some in-service Ts) and some NCTM standards & other books.
Blogging by ed celebs wasn't a thing for most of that time, so we didn't have access to some of that work cited in the original article.
Lots of hands-on math experiences, plus discussion of real-world pedagogy based on my students (PST's) observations in real schools.
#classroommath folks were very generous in responding to my prompt about what they think around eliciting student thinking, so here it is all gathered together: https://mathhombre.blogspot.com/2023/10/elicit-student-thinking.html #mtechat

@mathhombre
An important step is to give Ss individual think time before talking to partners/groups or sharing out to class -- the T shouldn't solicit any responses until that essential time has happened.
That way, everyone engages, & no priority to fast thinkers or those who can do it in their head.
Then you can elicit their thinking.
I was so bad at wait time early in my career that I had to actual count on my fingers (behind my back) to be sure I gave thinking time before discussing.

#classroommath #mtechat one of the main objectives with preservice teachers is to work on the practice of eliciting student thinking. What advice do you have for them? How did you get better at it? What are you working on now?
Episode 6. Who can't count? Xavier and I talk classroom management, technique/craft, area and perimeter, and meaningful teaching practice for novice teachers. https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/john-golden5/episodes/Episode-6---Management-and-Meaningful-Practice-e2a0095 #arteducation #classroommath #mtechat

Yes! And also avoid the "dog-and-pony show": I had a student teacher I was supervising who thought they needed a video / hands-on problem / online activity every single day.
Sometimes your just going to do regular math work (group work or direct instruction or whatever) and don't need to always have a fun hook.
What MS/HS math people are still writing/blogging/podcasting? Compiling a list for preservice teachers. #mtechat #classroommath
With two colleagues did a 3 hour intro to number talks for a K-5 school. https://bit.ly/NumberTalks-Stocking #classroommath #elemmathchat some teachers were experienced, will be new for some. #mtechat
Added a few new videos to http://bit.ly/mte-video. Looking for good number talk videos in particular. Do you know any to share? #mtechat #classroommath
