Hate to break it to you: lyric and chord charts ARE types of sheet music, especially if you print them off. Tab too!

I've had someone say to me, "I can't read sheet music, just tabs" (as if it were a bad thing) and I said, "tab IS sheet music, just a different way of writing it down."

They almost seemed relieved.

How has it gotten to this point?

Why does hip-hop (rap specifically) get such a bad reputation when country music is over here singing about whiskey, beer, and knocking boots?

Music Teachers:

How was your first week? What activities did you do with the kids?

If you haven't started yet, what's the plan?

Staff notation is important. It's common in certain genres and situations, BUT it's also important (especially in educational settings) to know when staff notation IS NOT needed or would be inappropriate.

Reading the staff is not the be-all-and-end-all.

We are better off embracing AI in music class, because:
1) it helps to generate ideas for new creative works.
2) Students will use it anyway, so they should learn how to use it ethically.
3) AI has been around a long time (in various forms) and no one has batted an eye until recently.

Also, thinking about this further: there is no such thing as a completely original idea. Every idea comes from somewhere. AI does this, too.

We should consider the idea that music literacy isn't just about reading. It also involves jamming, improvising, composing, and playing by ear.

What are the top 3 skills that young musicians need to have when they leave you?

Comment with:
1) the grade level you teach
2) top 3 skills
3) a bit of context if necessary

I would never disregard my ability to read the staff. It's an incredibly important skill to learn for any musician.

BUT

There's one thing, other than more reading, that will help a person be a better staff reader (if that's your goal), and it's learning by ear.
#musiced

Like language learning, copying sounds one hears is how language is acquired. Learning how to read fluently comes much later in life.

It makes sense if we think of music learning in this way.

If you can play the guitar, show the drummers where to begin, sing the lead part, switch to harmony, call out chord changes, and discipline kids simultaneously or separately all without missing a beat (and no score), you might just be an elementary school music teacher.

The skills I would say are the top of the list are:

Learning by ear—a person can literally learn anything they want, without notation.

Creativity—a person can create their own music, again, without notation.

Another is learning to read other, more widely accessible notational systems that can be found online for FREE or make music learning and making more accessible. (TUBS, NNS, Tab, Chromatic Colour System, chord and lyric sheets)

I would never advocate for anyone NOT to learn to read the staff, but I would say that perhaps it is not the most important musical skill going forward.

One problem is that the general public and #musiceducation as a whole put a lot of emphasis on it, because somehow it "legitimizes" music learning.

Student realization today:

Group of girls were forming a rock band and learning a song together on at recess time and discussing whether they needed another member (a boy) and one piped up and said "but there are NO all girl bands, it's always boys."
