Disoriented pelican found on Marco Island may have red tide poisoning, experts say

A brown #pelican discovered on #MarcoIsland last week is presumed to have red tide poisoning, according to the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.

"'Typically, we first get the notion that red tide is around when birds are sick,' said Dr. Michael Parsons, of the Water School at Florida Gulf Coast University.

"The seabird was spotted disoriented on the beach, according to a release. Despite those symptoms, which are common with the #neurotoxic algae, no red tide has been detected in our area, per the Florida Department of Health in Collier County.

"'We have no signs of red tide around, FWC is aware of this situation and will be monitoring it more closely,' Parsons said."

In Millions of Homes, High #Fluoride in #TapWater May Be a Concern

In communities across the U.S., water contains levels of fluoride some experts say could be harm developing brains.

"The town of #Seagraves sits on the high plains of #WestTexas, not far from the New Mexico border. Nearby, water pumped from the #OgallalaAquifer irrigates fields of peanuts and cotton.

"Dissolved in that West Texas water are copious amounts of fluoride. The tap water in Seagraves contains levels of the mineral that many experts believe could have #neurotoxic effects, lowering children’s IQs. The science on that effect is unsettled, and most experts say better research is needed. But nearly everyone agrees that at some point, high fluoride levels ought to be a matter of greater concern — even if they don’t always agree on what that point is.

"Many cities add low levels of fluoride to drinking water in a bid to prevent tooth decay, but the policy has long been controversial. Lost in that debate are the roughly 3 million Americans whose water naturally contains higher concentrations of fluoride — often at levels that even some fluoridation advocates now acknowledge could have neurodevelopmental effects.

"People in Seagraves and similarly affected communities are unlikely to be notified of those potential risks. Federal and state regulations require water utilities to tell customers receiving high-fluoride water that it could leave brown patches on children’s teeth, or even, at high levels, cause a rare skeletal condition.

"But, at least so far, the emerging science on neurological effects is not reflected in regulations. Consumer notices rarely, if ever, mention the possibility that fluoride could affect brain development. Nor do they contain advisories for pregnant women, even as many scientists, including some federal government researchers, now say there’s substantial evidence that such elevated fluoride levels can be harmful to developing fetuses."

How #Syngenta withheld a study on #glyphosate and brain damage for more than 20 years

#Aluminum #environmental #pollution: the silent killer

Abstract

The concern about aluminum (Al) toxicity has been proven in various cases. Some cases are associated with the fact that Al is a #neurotoxic substance that has been found in high levels in the brain tissues of #alzheimers disease (AD), #epilepsy, and autism patients. Other cases are related to infants, especially premature infants and ones with renal failure, who are at the risk of developing the central nervous system (CNS) and bone toxicity. This risk is a result of #infants’ exposure to Al from milk #formulas, intravenous-feeding solutions, and possibly from aluminum-containing vaccinations. Furthermore, most antiperspirants contain aluminum compounds that raise human exposure to toxic Al. This review paper is intended to discuss in detail the above concerns associated with aluminum, and hence urges the need for more studies exploring the effects of overexposure to Al and recommending mitigation actions.

Some "anthropogenic sources of aluminum are #toothpaste, vaccination, #antiperspirants, and some drugs, including buffered aspirin and #antacids (Crisponi et al. 2013). Currently, there is a great concern that human exposure to toxic aluminum from numerous sources is raising the potential for harmful health effects. Aluminum has been recently associated with neurotoxicity (Klotz et al. 2017). Hence, in the following sections, the paper discusses the impacts of aluminum on human health based on several cases reported in the literature."

The paper goes on to say that, "the human body is dermally exposed to Al by applying antiperspirants and cosmetic products (de Ligt et al. 2018). Specifically, aluminum chlorohydrate is an important ingredient present in many antiperspirant brands to treat hyperhidrosis (de Ligt et al. 2018). The frequent use of these items means that Al is accumulated in the body (Borowska and Brzoska 2015). As mentioned previously, Al is a toxic metal which has been linked to AD and other neurological disorder, and in the long-term contributes to bone toxicity. Hence, measuring the concentration of Al in antiperspirants and cosmetics and how much absorbed by the skin is of great necessity to ensure safe dermal use of these products. Unfortunately, there are only very few studies concerned with dermal exposure to Al (Corkins 2019; de Ligt et al. 2018; Freundlich et al. 1985; Weintraub et al. 1986)."

Wait, where's #oil? The short of it is "it doesn't fit on the graph". Over 13 BILLION tonnes produced in 2019. Of easily-leakable, #neurotoxic, #carcinogenic liquid, primarily produced to burn into exhaust that also contains neurotoxic and carcinogenic components. If you care about the environment and health, *THAT* is the enemy.
