Otto Dix's painting "Card-Playing War Cripples (Kartenspielende Kriegskrüppel)," from 1920, is a powerful and grotesque depiction of three severely disfigured World: Three severely disfigured and prosthetic-limbed World War I veterans play the card game skat in a dim café. One holds cards in his mouth, another with his toes, the third with a mechanical hand. A skull-shaped lamp looms behind them, and news clippings and playing cards are collaged into the scene. The soldier on the right bears Otto Dix’s self-portrait on his prosthetic jaw, inscribed “Lower jaw: prosthesis brand: Dix.”
