От PPP до облака: как развивался и зачем нужен SD-WAN

SD-WAN не появилась одномоментно — она представляет собой развитие нескольких сетевых технологий и уходит корнями в 80-е годы. Conferences like this, where everything is "SASE" this and "digital strategy" that, are all basically just new buzzword lead-ins for the same old discussions.

Digital strategy is about changing business practices, with technology, to increase customer satisfaction.

But no matter what, we are still product-oriented. The current session is "Digital Strategy is Business Strategy." The only people that's a revelation to is I.T. people, who assume the world
revolves around them.

There is an *incredible* amount of fawning and praise over SASE.

For fucks sake, it's an analyst-created buzz term for end to end security. We already had a term, it was called "end to end security"

Marketing bullshit, people are acting like nobody had thought of that before.

There are a lot of good points being brought up about not having enough visibility into cloud and cloud services, lack of standards around cloud governance and visibility, especially in a security context.

It is entirely possible that my opinions here are just old guy bitterness. I've been hearing about "open networking" for 25 years. Yet networking is one of the most interoperable technologies ever. Shit from different vendors works together because of a commitment to interoperability.

Standards efforts around *management* have yielded .....well mostly just SNMP.

Vendors differentiate on control and software. They have no incentive to standardize and give up their differentiators.

Oooh, now Vince Cerf. He's going over history about how interoperability was necessary in the early internet and how its becoming important for cloud to cloud communications.

I think most of this can be virtualized away without the cloud vendors doing a damn thing.

He's now talking about having something like SNMP for cloud services.

The problem with this approach is that the only agreement is often just on the basics.

The supposition that the first consideration of purchase of cloud and cloud services is "avoid vendor lock-in" I believe is old thinking.

They want a tool to solve the job. What ever solution you pick you are "locked-in" for 3-5 years open or not.

The buyer today is looking for *solutions* that work well and "open" is a lesser consideration. Just how it is. The open-first networking mind set denigrates the intelligence of the buyer, as if they don't know what's best for themselves.

Dude just prior to Lippis actually made the argument that customers should stop buying enterprise networking equipment to force them to all become completely open.

I mean sure, I guess. This is the same as the "what if they had a war and nobody came" argument.

This relies on companies valuing open networking *more* than just getting on with their own businesses. It fails the 'human nature' sniff test.
