The green glow comes from a phosphorus screen that is struck by a stream of electrons.

The electron beam is directed at a graphite target, and the regular structure of its atoms causes the beam to diffract, resulting in a bright central spot and a series of diffraction rings around it.

In this picture (and this particular setup) only two rings are visible.

Footage from the "2D gas simulator" I built in 2018 for a student research project. I really needed more energy to get higher frequency of collisions etc., but the velocity components came out pretty close to normal.

Almost a year ago, I used a shallow tub of water to map the equipotential lines and derive the field lines between two electrodes submerged in the water.
I used 30Vdc, except in a single case where I switched to 60Vdc as can be seen at the picture with the Fluke meter. The center line is at 30V, not 15 🙂
As a fun thing, you can submerge LEDs in the water, and if they’re oriented the right way according to the field (polarity)direction, they’ll actually light up, right there in the water! 🚨💧👌🏻🤓
It’s a fun and safe way to play with electric fields and experience their properties 👍🏼

Today I take you to a tour through the PHELIX laser bay and my part of the experiment. The "Petawatt High Energy Laser for Heavy Ion Experiments" is able to generate a Laser burst with up to 200 J Energy within 0.7picoseconds. We are using 2 bursts so only 20~30J Energy per burst. The 1st one is a few ns long and heats up a thin foil or plastic target and generates a plasma. This plasma is then illuminated by the 2nd 0.7ps pulse. Those Xrays are used to image the plasma.

My task is to try measuring the spectrum of the Xrays (of the 2nd pulse) using a Timepix3 detector. This is then used to improve the image reconstruction.
