Robert Murray M'Cheyne was a minister in the Church of Scotland who composed a popular bible reading plan. Here he considers objections to charity. One is the idea that one’s money is one’s own. He offers the sarcastic suggestion that Christ could have adopted the same spirit and kept His own blood to Himself. M’Cheyne asks, then, where would we have been?

This attitude is common.

How can you consider the work of Christ?

ROBERT MURRAY M'CHEYNE (1813 - 1843) SERMON LXXXII "Objection: My money is my own. Answer: Christ might have said, My blood is my own, my life is my own; no man forceth it from me: then where should we have been?"

Charles Spurgeon, particular Baptist preacher, considers caring for the ill in a town in economic distress. To understand suffering, climb rickety stairs. Put yourself by sympathy on their bed, suffer and feel the pains.

Many with no patience for “peace and justice” may be better at this ministry of caring than bleeding heart activists.

"You and I may not be tortured with the pangs of sickness or the weakness of decay, but to climb some three pairs of stairs to a miserable back room, and to see a child of God patient in his tribulation, and to put ourselves by sympathy upon his bed, and suffer and smart with him, may give us the next best thing to the experience itself."

Real Life - Philipp Mickenbecker
