EXIL – Podcast launch event on Nov 10, 2025, in the Staatsbibliothek Berlin.
The first episode of the second season is dedicated to the comic artist Lily Renée (1921–2022), who was forced to flee Vienna in 1939 and became known in the US as one of the few successful female comic artists of the 1940s.
EXIL is a collaboration between the Leo Baeck Institute New York | Berlin (LBI) and the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
On the podium: Stephan-Andreas Casdorff (moderator), Iris Berben, Prof. Dr. Frederek Musall (professor of Jewish philosophy and intellectual history), Danielle Spera (journalist).

Wir waren Stadtbild auf der Spontandemo heute (19.10.25) am Brandenburger Tor. Nach Veranstalterangaben waren wir 5000 (Polizei: 3000).
Die rassistische Aussage von Friedrich Merz über die Notwendigkeit weiterer Abschiebungen zur Behebung des von ihm und seinen Parteifreunden wahrgenommenen Problem im Stadtbild zu beheben, hat uns hierher gebracht. Wir wenden uns gegen die Normalisierung von Rassismus und Ausgrenzung von allem als ‘fremd’ empfundenen in Kommunikation und Handeln unserer aktuellen Regierung. Wir beklagen populistische und von Hass getriebene Politik gegen Migranten und sozial Schwache und fordern stattdessen, die drängenden Probleme solidarisch und lösungsorientiert anzugehen. Das stellen Max (insta: @maximal.demokratisch) und Luna Moebius in engagierten Reden dar.

Özgür Özvatan bringt in seiner wenig motivierenden Rede seine Frustration mit dem aus seiner Sicht offenbar hoffnungslos gescheiterten zivilgesellschaftlichen Widerstand gegen eine stetig rechts driftende Politik, mit teilweise diffus adressierten Beschimpfungen zum Ausdruck. Die Moderatorin der Veranstaltung, Shanon Bobinger ahnte was kommt, und kündigte ihn an, er werde uns jetzt mit einer Rede “behelligen”. Applaus gab es dann auch keinen. Seine Frustration konnte ich verstehen bis teilweise teilen, was das zu dieser Gelegenheit sollte, ist mir schleierhaft.
Musik gab es von Julienne Mbodje und anderen (Namen trage ich nach, wenn ich sie rausfinde).
We were part of the spontaneous demonstration today (19 October 2025) at the Brandenburg Gate. According to the organisers, there were 5,000 of us (police: 3,000).
Friedrich Merz’s racist statement about the need for further deportations to remedy what he and his party colleagues perceive as problems in the cityscape brought us here. We oppose the normalisation of racism and the exclusion of everything perceived as ‘foreign’ in the communication and actions of our current government. We deplore populist and hate-driven policies against migrants and the socially disadvantaged and instead call for the urgent problems to be addressed in a spirit of solidarity and with a focus on solutions. This is presented by Max and Luna Moebius in passionate speeches.
In his uninspiring speech, Özgür Özvatan expresses his frustration with what he sees as the hopeless failure of civil society resistance against a steadily right-wing drift in politics, with some of his insults directed at vague targets. The moderator of the event, Shanon Bobinger, sensed what was coming and announced that he would now “bother” us with a speech. There was no applause. I could understand and even share some of his frustration, but what that had to do with this occasion is beyond me.

Unter dem 2021 eröffneten Golda-Meir-Steg hindurch sehe ich am Nordufer des Berlin Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal einen zwischen Nachwende-Bebauung stehenden Wachturm der alten Grenzanlage. Darin ist die Gedenkstätte Günter Liftin, der am 24. August 1961 beim Versuch, durch den nahen Humboldthafen nach Westberlin zu schwimmen von Ostberliner Transportpolizisten erschossen wurde. Er war das erste Maueropfer, sein Bruder Jürgen hat nach dem Mauerfall diese Gedenkstätte initiiert.
Bis 1990 war das Südufer des Kanals die Grenze zwischen DDR und BRD. Jetzt sitze ich hier in der ,Europacity’, einem neu errichteten Stadtteil auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Güterbahnhofs an der innerstädtischen Grenze. Wohnbebauung mit Loggien, Restaurants und ein paar Läden in den EGs zum Platz hinter mir. Am Ufer beim Steg gibt es eine breite Treppenanlage mit Sitzstufen aus Granit. Am Sonntagabend sitzen darauf, genau wie auf der schon etwas bewucherten Treppe am Nordufer gegenüber, viele Menschen in der Sonne.

Under the Golda Meir footbridge, opened in 2021, I can see a watchtower from the old border fortifications on the north bank of the Berlin Spandauer Schifffahrtskanal, standing between post-reunification buildings. Inside is the memorial to Günter Liftin, who was shot dead by East Berlin transport police officers on 24 August 1961 while trying to swim to West Berlin through the nearby Humboldthafen. He was the first victim of the Wall and his brother Jürgen initiated this memorial after the fall of the Wall.
Until 1990, the south bank of the canal was the border between East Germany and West Germany. Now I’m sitting here in ‘Europacity’, a newly built neighbourhood on the site of the former goods station on the inner-city border. Residential buildings with loggias, restaurants and a few shops on the ground floors facing the square behind me. There is a wide flight of steps with granite seating on the bank by the footbridge. On Sunday evenings, lots of people sit on them in the sun, just like on the somewhat overgrown steps on the north bank opposite.

‘Hanadi II’ hat um zehn natürlich zu. Sonst bekommen Damen, Herren und Kinder hier Frisur, Tattoo oder Kosmetik. Im Schaufenster sind Instrumente zur Selbstfrisur in Kartons.
Neben dem Friseur ist ein Mobilfunkladen. Davor stehen Männer und reden. Passanten und E-Roller Fahrer passieren auf dem schmalen Bürgersteig - ich habe mich neben einem abgedeckten Zweirad platziert, dass mich vor Kollisionen schützt.

‚Hanadi II‘ is of course closed at ten. On daytime, women, men and children can get a haircut, tattoo or cosmetics here. In the shop window there are boxes of instruments for self-styling.
Next to the hairdresser is a mobile phone shop. Men stand in front of it and talk. Pedestrians and e-scooter riders pass on the narrow pavement - I have positioned myself next to a covered two-wheeler to protect myself from collisions.

Der eurogida Supermarkt schließt um acht, zwei Männer räumen zügig das Gemüse in der Straßenauslage zusammen, und ich kann nur noch die Blech-Jalousien vor den Schaufenstern zeichnen. Die Möbel vor dem Café-Bereich bleiben stehen. Ein Mann mit Dreadlocks setzt sich. Zu Steppweste, Rucksack und Jeans trägt er rosa Plüschpantoffeln. Auf einer anderen Bank bespaßt eine junge Frau ihr Kind, bis ein Mann kommt und sie zusammen mit dem Kind im Buggy weggehen.

The Eurogida supermarket closes at eight. Two men quickly clear away the vegetables from the street display and all I can do is draw the tin blinds in front of the shop windows. The furniture in front of the café remains. A man with dreadlocks sits down. To his quilted waistcoat, rucksack and jeans he is wearing pink slippers. On another bench, a young woman is entertaining her child when a man arrives, and they leave together, pushing the child's buggy.

Neben mir - ich hocke auf dem Bürgersteig- parkt ein Mercedes ein. Eine Frau steigt aus und sieht mich zeichnen. Sie bittet um ein Portrait. Wir vereinbaren fünf Minuten. Ein Mann, der Fahrer des Autos, erkenne ich am Schlüssel in der Hand, kommt dazu, sie fragt, ob ich sie beide zusammen zeichnen könnte, so dauert es etwas länger, bis die beiden die Zeichnung und ich ein Foto-Scan davon bekomme und ich mit der Zeichnung des geschlossenen Supermarkts weitermache.

Next to me - I'm crouching on the pavement - a Mercedes parks. A family gets out and one of them, a woman sees me drawing. She asks for a portrait. I tell her that I just want to take a photo of the drawing and am happy to draw her. We agree on five minutes. A man, the driver of the car, who I recognise by the key in his hand, joins us, she asks if I could draw them both together, so it takes a little longer until they both get the drawing and I get a photo scan of it and I continue with the drawing of the closed supermarket.
