Meet The Living Echo
Race: Warforged
Bardic College: Whispers
This bard is a sentient tape recorder built by a forgotten civilization. It cannot originate speech, only replay what it’s heard. It manipulates enemies by weaponizing their own words and fears -- like a sonic haunted mirror. Its personality is entirely cobbled from quotes and soundbites, making it alien and uncanny in dialogue. Each phrase has meaning but no context.
Psychic Blades and Words of Terror become refracted sound: replayed screams, arguments, secrets, or lullabies overheard in the past.
Bonus Action: Psychic Blades. Delivered through mimicry of the enemy’s own voice (mocking, accusing, screaming).
Action: Cast spells like Dissonant Whispers, Command, or Tasha’s Hideous Laughter using warped playback of enemy fears, allies' deaths, or their own past regrets.
It builds its "tape bank" of lines overheard throughout the campaign. Each phrase is linked to a tactical purpose. "Not again!” = fear-inducing, “You’re worthless” = Cutting Words, “Help me...” = haunting, emotional bait, etc. Can only use words and phrases said around them during the campaign (with some exceptions for "before the campaign started"-times).
Instead of standard speech, the bard layers sound fragments to construct eerie sentences. Allies might hear three overlapping voices say “You... Can... Win” -- one from a friend, one from a foe, one from a stranger.
Cannot generate original sentences, any planning or persuasion must use pieced-together quotes. The DM could offer new voices after each major NPC encounter, creating incentive to "record" key moments.
