Ruislip Station, just passing through.

This signal box has actually been a listed building since August 2000, so it is celebrating a quarter century this very month - however the station was built way earlier, in 1904, for the Harrow and Uxbridge Railway.

That was taken over by the Metropolitan Railway less than a year later, and their trains still stop there, along with the Piccadilly line.

Both terminate in Uxbridge.

Ah, Ruislip, just thirteen miles from London, but already partially out in the country. And there is a Waitrose, what more can I say...

This is an unusual photo and the signal box is almost an incidental, the main object being the platform roof, with its curvaceously ended wooden slats dropping vertically down at the very edges, which occupies the top quarter of the frame, at a slight diagonal, of course, downwards from top left to top right - and the pillar, which supports the roof, and runs up the three quarter line. That has stripes, of varying hues, dark at the very bottom, which is slightly thicker, then yellow as it slopes into the pole, then horizontal bands, dark again, and white, of equal height, then a thin dark one, and a very long white, which culminates in another outwards and diagonal thickening, from which two arms curve beside the continuation of the pole to make for better support.

The signal box is rectangular, brown brick to base, then timbered in red, to make squares, over a white body. The face towards us, which in actuality is the right hand side, has two windows, each with six panes. Then there is a grey slate roof, which slopes up diagonally from each corner of the building, and ends in a point at the centre of the roof. A sign of the times is the fact that there is a chimney on the roof. And rising from the platform, to end between the windows, is a staircase, which was the way the signalman used to get in to the box in order to do his job.
