I’m gutted this t-shirt is too small for me, but if anyone out there is doing #SecondhandFirst for Christmas themed clothes, this is a bargain https://www.vinted.co.uk/items/5242985046-snow-dalek-t-shirt
@intheseheels That’s a bargain for any Goths out there who are looking to #SecondhandFirst refresh their wardrobe.
Even designer label shoppers can try #SecondhandFirst with the opening of this new shop in #Belfast https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/news/belfast-news/lisburn-road-boutique-charity-store-30157021
“We are really concentrating on quality wear - ladieswear and menswear, shoes, handbags etc. We have a little bit of Guess, some Ralph Lauren, we have Valentino…”
This makes grim reading https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/article/2024/may/08/castoffs-to-catwalk-fashion-show-shines-light-on-vast-chile-clothes-dump-visible-from-space
I try to get the most wear out of my clothes as possible- there’s a small repair pile on the table right now - and appropriately donate/recycle the stuff I don’t need.
But with so many clothes bought, and unwanted clothes in circulation even #SecondhandFirst can hardly make a dent in the problem. And it’s not the countries causing the problem that are dealing with the consequences.
I had a good charity shop hoke this morning and got a couple of Summer tops and bottoms. I’m particularly chuffed with the bright Skunkfunk trousers, once I’d figured out the popper and wrap fastening.
I was struck by the shop’s pricing. It looks like tops, trousers and skirts are all £5. I know that’s a bargain in this day and age, but it does lead to Primark being priced the same as Sugarhill Boutique.
I enjoy my bargains, but wonder how they sell the Primark stuff.
I had a quick rummage in a local charity shop after the dentist's today, my wee treat for being a big, brave girl.
It looks like pricing starting at £5 is their new normal, compared to the £3 I was used to only a few years ago. Can't complain too much: I did find a nice 100% merino jumper.
#SecondhandFirst shoppers: what are the prices like in your local charity shops?
Oh here's the coat (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.)
Happy #SecondhandFirst New Year to all my fellow secondhand shoppers, and I hope you enjoy this article:
“while thousands across the country will be marking the start of 2024 in freshly-bought outfits, a growing number will be bucking the trend to and seeing in the new year in something old.”
Nice article that’s very much in keeping with #SecondhandFirst https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/nov/11/son-fun-colourful-clothes-boy-fashion-pre-loved
As a non-parent I was surprised to see how much some children’s clothes cost new. £45 for a kid’s jumper!!
Looks like #SecondhandFirst is even catching on for Halloween: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-67020746
“People are being asked to raid their wardrobes and attics for used Halloween costumes and props to donate for a swap shop event at the weekend… where people can swap or get their old costumes repaired for free.”
Derry/Londonderry holds Europe’s biggest Halloween festival, which involves a lot of fancy costumes. So it’s great seeing them getting in on the re-use angle for what are often throwaway buys.
This isn’t really a #SecondhandFirst article, but I love the “repair your clothes” ethos it sets out. And it’s good to see big brands getting in on the act too.
On the one hand, this article singing the praises of secondhand shopping in Belfast, is great to see: https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/news/northern-ireland/i-shopped-second-hand-clothes-27859454
On the other hand, tsk at it bringing more competition into my #SecondhandFirst hunting grounds.
This article is a strong argument for #SecondhandFirst when it comes to refreshing your wardrobe: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-66985595
"More clothes are being made than ever before, yet we are using them less," she adds. "The fashion industry is responsible for more annual greenhouse gas emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined.
"It is also a significant contributor to biodiversity loss due to soil degradation and waterway pollution..."
I never fail to be wowed by Francesco Colucci's TRAID windows 😍
