Now its time for me to leave Washington. I had a super cool week at #SIGIR2024! I look already forward to next year in Italy π
Had really fun time presenting the first keynote titled "Bias and Beyond: On Generative AI and the Future of Search and Society" at the #BIAS2024 workshop at #SIGIR2024 earlier today. Lots of engaging questions and discussions from the attendees.
Honored to receive the ACM SIGIR Early Career Researcher Awards for excellence in (i) Research and (ii) Community Engagement.

Tomorrow I'll give the opening keynote at the BIAS workshop at 9:10am. Hope to see you there!

Gulam Shakir, Chief Technology Officer and Chief AI Officer at National Archives and Records Administration, talks about detecting personally identifiable information with AI - but they found PII in embedded images (compressed) in powerpoint files. #sigir2024
More great news from #SIGIR2024 :
Not "just" one but TWO of our Radboud Assistant Professors in information retrieval have received a very special recognition by #SIGIR in the form of an Early Career Award:
Harrie Oosterhuis and Faegheh Hasibi
So proud of our IR research group!!
Many congratulations with this special honour! We knew you are special, but now it is official :-)
The SIGIR Exec at work at the #SIGIR2024 Business lunch.
Agenda items include:
Elections next year, so please consider volunteering. ACM Open. Budget (back to prep pandemic healthiness). Upcoming conferences (July 13-18 2025 in beautiful Padua!).
A very fun (!) reveal video:
SIGIR 2026 in Melbourne, Australia (in July...)!
Bids for 50th SIGIR, 2027, from Toronto, Silicon Valley, and an original "anywhere in North America" bid by @dietz and Bhaskar Mitra.
Tuesday's personal highlights of #SIGIR2024 include the keynote by Thorsten Joachims https://sigir-2024.github.io/keynotes.html#joachims in three parts:
1. coactive learning for tasks like writing assistance,
2. the idea to build on control theory for long term objectives ("macro-economic"), and
3. user profiles as text, for personalising LLMs, Eg see REBEL by Gao et al., 2024 https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.16767
Very well delivered and inspiring talk.
What's happening at #SIGIR2024 today, people?
Harrie Oosterhuis spreading the news about the continuation of IRJ under the new flag:

Random thought re: #SIGIR2024 discussion of research inclusivity w.r.t. resources, etc.: what if we had a paper award for Most Effective Resource Use? Recognize papers that are exemplary in terms of knowledge per CPU/GPU/kilowatt-hour?

Uncontextualized significance considered dangerous
by Nicola Ferro and Mark Sanderson
https://dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/3626772.3657827
Paper looks into the number of cases where doing Bonferroni correction would modify your conclusion about significance. It's larger than you might think.
Today in the #DEI (Diversity, Equity, Inclusivity) lunch session at #SIGIR2024, we have a panel discussion with Bhaskar Mitra, Clemencia Siro, Vanessa Murdock, Doug Oard, and Nicola Ferro.
What DEI aspects are important to focus on the coming years?
Ellen Voorhees in her #SIGIR2024 Salton Award talk: "Do not interpret measurement error as super-human effectiveness."
this needs to be stated repeatedly and loudly.
Still amazing that Keith vR and KSJ made this proposal in the UK and it took 15 years for the US to apply it, finally. What a good decision from NIST/TREC/Ellen and Donna Harman!
Also: Finally a slide in the #saltonaward talk by Ellen Voorhees with comic sans characters :-) (TRECcies will understand.)
What a great choice for the Salton Award!
Ellen Voorhees, Salton's student and (my words) Chief Evaluation Officer of the IR community!
Keynotes #SIGIR2024 should be broadcast on YouTube.
Overview: https://sigir-2024.github.io/keynotes.html
First coming up is the Salton award lecture:

Many stats presented too. I noticed fly by that UvA has many *many* submissions accepted, and, Stavanger also made it into the top on frequency. (Nice job, MdR and team, and Krisztian Balog and team.) But I was too slow for a photo, so that's it for now.
If you are at SIGIR:
Please find your IRRJ flyer at the registration desk or the info table!
And, read up this thread for extra background info. Tnx @djoerd for starting this initiative, and the editors for stepping up to serve the IR community.
Finally: submit your work!!
