By revealing how common a deviant behavior is, do you think it makes that behavior not deviant anymore?

2024-10-22

@cjhand_24 Totally, these readings are truly making me realize that what is deviant entirely depends on perspective.

Surveillance vs Terrorism really did a well job to illustrate the impact both have on each other. After listening to this podcast, I am left wondering how much surveillance is used by our government and how much of it has actually been helpful to prevent terrorism from happening.

Operation Peek A Boo was a very interesting discussion regarding parental surveillance. Life 360 is such a great example of this phenomenon as it is becoming increasingly used for the teenage years to track the whereabouts of one's kid. As one who is forced to have this app on my phone, i can confidently say that this has definitely strained some relationships within my family

I also learned about all of the devices that can be used surveil children. Hearing about the device that can be put in cars to control speed, break reaction time, etc and the device that can be used to determine whether or not their child is sexually active was alarming. Children are losing all forms of privacy and these devices are going to lead to serious distrust with their parents

I listened to "Operation Peek-a-boo" and learned a lot about parental surveillance. I had no idea that there was a pregnancy app that could track the weight and a baby's kicks while the woman was still pregnant. I didn't realize that technology has become so advanced that they can surveil a baby before they are even born.

The discourse surround Life360 is very interesting to me. I remember when I lived with my parents, Life360 was my biggest nightmare. I understand that parents want and need to make sure their children are safe, but even so, some of the features seemed invasive to me. Like, do you REALLY need to know how fast the car I'm in was going? After taking this class, I've now come to the conclusion that an entity knowing how fast my car is going is just the tip of the iceberg.

I never even knew babies experienced surveillance before they were even born. I feel like keeping track of all of your baby’s data can be helpful when it comes to finding any discrepancies or if there is an underlying medical issue, but this technology can very easily be abused and be an invasion of privacy if it can be accessed by others so easily.

I never grew up with Life360 with my parents. However, I have Life360 with my friends to see when we are in class while in college or when I had a late night class and had to walk back in the dark. I know my friends would not misuse my Life360 data, but my parents would worry about me and check often. I always grew up with my parents trusting me and just to let them know what I am doing so they don’t worry. It is really sad to see some family relationships get ruined over surveillance.

When learning about data justice, I found it interesting that someone in a low-income area and belongs to a minority ethnic group is more likely to be targeted for surveillance. Surveillance has so much to do with social class and can display lots of inequalities. I feel like even if you are rich and of high social class you would also be surveilled heavily because you stick out for having a lot of money and resources.

For our digital future, I feel like we are only going to get less and less privacy. I never really realized how much privacy I am losing by using social media until this course. Also, with many surveillance technologies being created as time goes on, the more known and used they will become.

In "Surveillance vs. Terrorism," I thought the discussion of the Boston Bombing was really insightful. I thought this was a powerful connection to bring up for sure. The question made here by the group is so true: if it is claimed that surveillance can stop acts of terrorism, how has it not been more effective? Specifically, the tragedies in Boston were not so long ago that there was not the technology to prevent it. Definitely curious to look into this more! Great point.

I agree that surveillance in a parent/child relationship demonstrates power more obviously than in other relationships. It’s scary to think about what parents can justify nowadays with new technology.

The surveillance devices discussed in Operation Peek a Boo seemed like a HUGE invasion of privacy and would have made me extremely uncomfortable if my parents had used such devices on me.

It’s crazy to think that babies will have a digital footprint before they even enter the world. I feel uncomfortable with the fact that they have no choice over this digital footprint or the consequences it may have for them later.

"Operation Peek-a-Boo"
As someone with life 360 on my phone while in college, I loved the breakdown this group provided. It was relatable in the sense of how increased parental supervision and, in turn, surveillance not only harms familial relationships, but strains growth as well. I personally feel somewhat of a strain on my own relationship with my parents due to how overly involved they are in my personal life. Parents should absolutely be involved, but there is a definite line aswell.

In Blow the Whistle, I found it interesting how the different political parties support different whistleblowers. Since the whistleblowers are releasing information about the government, I assumed that all government officials would be against whistleblowing. So, it makes me curious as to why they are in support of government secrets being made public.

"Surveillance vs. Terrorism"
I really liked how personal this group made everything. As someone born post 9/11, hearing someone my age talking about what life was like during and after the Boston Marathon made this feel real. I feel like most people struggle to make the threat of terrorism "real" because of how detached we are from it. I also really enjoyed listening to the interview portion as well. The first person testimonials all around helped me also feel really connected.

I think Giana, AJ, and Jaclyn explained perfectly what whistleblowers are and why they do what they do. I found it interesting how they mentioned that there are laws in place to keep people from sharing government information. Yet, the government keeps tabs on all of us. I feel as if this is the start of a distrusting relationship, because as US citizens we have a right to know what decisions are being made in the government.

I think Alaina, Kelsey, and Claire explained perfectly how today's surveillance just makes sneaky kids. The constant state of surveillance does not teach kids to be obedient, but instead how to sneak around these technologies. I have also seen this happen and my own life, so while adults may think that this new technology is very innovative and helpful, it also raises kids that learn to find loopholes in everything.
