Watching THE MAKANAI is making me want to boot up Sims and design/decorate some really cute Japanese style houses.
My brain and body have wanted to do *nothing* today.
I spent like 5 hrs farming bosses and grinding alchemy in Atelier Sophie and watched a few THE MAKANAI episodes.
Now I just need to gather the spoons to make some pad thai for dinner.
#TheMakanai on Netflix is fascinating to me because I'd already watched the #anime adaptation of the same story, available as #KiyoInKyoto on Crunchyroll.
It's a sweet, gentle series that gives a rare glimpse into the world of geisha. But mostly I'm in it for the food. It's never anything fancy, just depictions of Japanese comfort food, but watching it feels like getting a warm hug.
I finished The Makanai on Netflix tonight and I'm not sure how I feel about it from a shipping perspective.
From an entertainment perspective, it was great. A+ twee Japanese expressing your feelings through food, lots of cute characters, loved the maiko/geiko arts/dressing/beauty I got to look at.
The shipping is like...the show ships it, I think(?) but is kind of aggressively nonsexual about it?? I would love to hear what other people thought of it. #theMakanai

If #TheMakanai gets an English-language remake, it will be about a knife-wielding girl detective who infiltrates a ballerina cult in Neo-Tokyo (shot on location in Vancouver)

It was very cold in Peoria today, so we make some comfort food for dinner tonight.
Inspired by the Episode #2 of #TheMakanai, we made #oyakodon (parent-child-rice) using an premade oyakodon sauce for this chicken, egg, onion, and rice bowl.
It was very yummy and filled with umami!
Here is a recipe that uses an oyakodon sauce made from scratch.
Since watching #TheMakanai, we have been inspired to be a little more creative with our meals.
My wife had a hankering for cold sesame noodles, so we made a shopping trip for the ingredients. She made the noodles and I made the Korean-style BBQ chicken. It was very yummy--comfort food!
After watching Episode 2 of #TheMakanai, my wife and I have a craving for oyakodon, which we haven't made in several years.

@Kitchenstorey @Brilliantcrank all are very japanese slice of life type stories. I binged #themakanai in a couple of days. Again, very calming and educational. Had to stop every so often and google the vocab. e.g. Okini for thank you in the dialect rather than Arigato or Domo Arigato. And it's quite Kyoto/Gion centric but features dishes from the districts the girls are from.
#whatdidyoueatyesterday is different. A gay closeted lawyer is in a relationship with a flamboyant (japanese style so don't expect Rupaul) hairdresser and how food is their glue and love language and how it also brings the lawyer and his parents closer. This series is like gay social commentary through food.
#izakayabottakuri is just foodcentric but again slice of life of two sisters who run their father's izzakaya. The miso cured yolks are a must do.
Through #midnightdiner my staples have become the #tonjiru (pork belly veg miso soup) and through #themakanai I did a passable #oyakodon
