Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out the music video or performance I liked best. This week I have chosen
H1-KEY – Time To Shine.

I make no apology for choosing the same group as last week – I loved this performance of “Time To Shine”. In addition to H1-KEY having their own distinctive sound, their performance comes across to me as one possessed of that hard to define but nevertheless real quality, stage presence.

“More fool you!” some readers may well be thinking. “It’s all lip sync!”

I know that “live” in kpop can incorporate lip sync, backing tracks, real time vocal processing, post production editing, and goodness knows what else. I also know that much of this applies to western pop too. Most importantly of all, I know I don’t really care that much; what matters to me is not the process but the final product.

Would I feel the same way if I were going to a live concert? Maybe not – but there are all sorts of other reasons I'm not planning on attending a kpop concert in person anyway.
