Adolph Saphir was a Jewish Presbyterian missionary. Here he considers the implications of “Our Daily Bread” from the Lord’s Prayer. He just revels in the joys of the life of this service. I’d ruin it with a paraphrase.

ADOLPH SAPHIR (1831-1891) The Lord's Prayer "And if we thus live in the spirit of love, as we give we receive. He that spreads light and cheerfulness, kindness and encourage- ment, gains himself in inward peace and strength, knowledge and wisdom; in comforting others we are comforted, and in building up the saints our own souls are edified."

Robert Fleming, Scottish Presbyterian minister, reflects on the martyrs of Christianity (and in his age, Protestantism). He claims that the only way persecuted Christian martyrs could respond with tenderness and compassion to their adversaries, is through the divine Spirit of God.

This is a proof of religion to him. God be praised.

How can you respond with tenderness when challenged or persecuted?

"Quest. VI. How is it demonstrable, that such remarkable Sufferings of times past for the Truth of Christ, were both founded on the alone Certainty thereof and carried out by a divine Spirit above any Assistance of Nature? Answ. .. Ill. That this could be no possible Dissimulation, or Counterfeit, when they [martyrs] were stepping into Eternity, nor the Product of a dissentered Judgment, while all might see what Seriousness of Spirit, Tenderness, and Bowels of Compassion to their Adversaries they did then evidence."
