#MangaMonday “Under Ninja” by Kengo Hanazawa

By all appearances (and, frankly, temperament) Kurou Kumagakure is a slacker. In actuality, he’s a low level ninja waiting for an assignment. Meanwhile, a Russian has arrived in Japan and is under the impression that he needs to collect three penises to become a ninja.

This story has a rhythm of positing something strange, making it seem almost plausible, and then throwing something even weirder into the mix. The art is realistic, which helps sell the increasingly crazy world. Actual violence is infrequent but graphic. Any naughty bits are censored, but there’s some frank language.

An #Anime adaption just ended. It made significant adjustments to the story in order to keep open the question of whether the characters were delusional for as long as possible. It worked, but added confusion to an already complex world. The manga is slightly more straightforward.

Ongoing with three of 11 volumes in English (Denpa.)
