One of the fundamental teachings of the Upanishads (which came before the Bhagavad Gita) is that one should control or suppress the senses to realize the higher self within us. In this verse from the Gita, Krishna uses visualization to explain how easy it is to be distracted.

I believe it's possible to suppress our senses and realize our higher self because occasionally, when I have the Tv on, and I am focusing on another task, there are periods where I don't register the sounds coming from the Tv. The sounds don’t change—my focus does. Then if focus can stifle the sound from reaching the ears, all the other senses should be able to be suppressed as well.
