[EN] I’ve been in Japan for a week and a half now and, last Sunday, I went to see Miyazaki Hayao’s latest film, “Kimitachi wa dō ikiru ka?” (“The Boy and the Heron”, lit. “How do you live?”). I always say I am more of a Takahata Isao person but, of course, I enjoy Miyazaki’s films too. I especially like his impressive imagination and the unique themes he uses in his works. In “Kimitachi wa dō ikiru ka?” he takes some inspiration from his own childhood experiences. These slice of life elements of the story are really moving. Naturally, there’s also a fantasy side to it: with an enormous parallel world of wonders, where the main character, Mahito, must grow up and make an important choice.
“Kimitachi wa dōikiru ka?” is a story about acceptance and coming to terms with loss. It’s also a tale about how we live our lives and how our individual choices shape the whole world — as the original Japanese title, taken from the book by Yoshino Genzaburō, suggests.
If I were to compare this film with another one by Miyazaki, I would probably choose “Spirited Away”. This one, however, is bolder, more mature and more personal. You should all see it when it gets released in your countries.
