Of particular interest is the yellow sweet. This is how 'kinton' (きんとん), a typically fluffy-looking wagashi, originally looked.

Kashōchodai (嘉祥頂戴) ended with the Meiji Restoration, and the tradition of eating sweets on July 16th all but vanished.

Then, in 1979, 'Wagashi-no-hi' (和菓子の日) was established by the 'Japan Wagashi Association' (全国和菓子協会) to celebrate Japanese confectionery.

Eating sweets on this day slowly spread to the masses.

A particular custom emerged, in a call-back to the original celebration, of eating 16 types of sweets (costing 16 文 'mon'). As the act of eating was a prayer of sorts, they were consumed in silence!

An official document of 1818 states that 20,000 individual sweets were prepared in Edo Castle (江戸城) for this single day!

June 16th is a day for celebrating traditional Japanese sweets...something we do a lot in the tearoom.

After a series of epidemics Emperor Ninmyō (仁明天皇) held special prayers on the 16th June 848 for the health and prosperity of the nation.

The characters for confectionery/sweets '菓子' (kashi) were also a homonym for '下賜' (kashi), which meant the giving of something to a person of lower social standing than you.
This act of giving sweets reaffirmed hierarchical ties and subservience to the shōgunate.

The tradition of presenting the emperor with sweets for the 'Kashō Celebrations' (嘉祥の祝) was still alive in the Muromachi period.
In the 'Oyudono-no-ue-no-nikki' (御湯殿上日記), a diary kept by the ladies of court, these sweets were known as 'katsū'/'kazū' (かつう/かずう).

As it was the 16th day, Ninmyō made an offering of 16 kinds of sweets & mochi (餅) to the gods.
The appearance of a white turtle in Bungo Province (豊後国) seemed to confirm that the prayers had worked, and so the emperor changed the era name to Kashō (嘉祥 'good augury'-848-51).
