天生的「考據癖」加「狹義的」歷史家的訓練，使他（指胡適）即使在研究中國哲學史或中國思想史的時候，也常常不知不覺把哲學史或思想史最核心的義理和價值問題，轉換成外緣性的考據問題，然後再用外緣的考據企圖解決——其實是掩蓋——核心的義理和價值問題。並且，從其極狹隘的泛科學主義信仰出發，胡適對一切形上學不僅毫無會心，毫無興趣，而且避之唯恐不及；而胡適反傳統的文化立場及其社會達爾文主義的進步史觀，又使胡適靈魂深處懷有着一種現代人對古人的傲慢。

由於胡適對義理和價值問題的排斥，以及對古代哲人欠缺「瞭解之同情」（陳寅恪語），所有這些，都使得他的個人性向非常不合適談玄說理，因而也非常不適合從事中國哲學史的研究和撰寫。

胡適是「五四」激烈反傳統主義運動的領軍人物，在他內心深處，仍然認同中國傳統文化的某些價值，在他的某些文章尤其是英文著作中，也留下一些稱許中國文化的言論。

不過一個有趣的現象是，基於「內外有別」的原則，胡適把自己對中國文化的某些價值的承認或讚許，大都限制在英語世界之內，免得對中文讀者和自己倡導的反傳統主義運動帶來不良影響。
