so hum... Funko has caused itch.io to be taken down, wth

I kid you not,
@itch.io
has been taken down by Funko of "Funko Pop" because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called Brand Shield that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain

I don't normally ask for boosts, but I have just LEAPED out of my comfort zone and set up my own gamejam, specifically for users of the Fediverse, and I'm scared shitless that nobody else will join, turning this into one giant embarrassment for me.

So if you want to do me a giant favor, please boost (and even better: join!) this: mastodon.gamedev.place/@fedi_j PLEASE! 🥺 🙏

The 1414° Code Forge 🌍 boosted:

Hello everyone! 👋 The FediJam is the world's first (?) game jam exclusively for users of the Fediverse. During September, team up with others and... CREATE - A - GAME! Analog or digital, using whatever (non-AI) tools you feel comfortable with.

➡️ Join now: itch.io/jam/fedi-jam

Boosts VERY appreciated! ❤️ Spread the word!!!

I built possibly the earliest same-tab tool for getting AI image descriptions in Aug 2022, using a then newly updated Microsoft AI API. I listened to Disabled folks about it. I've payed close attention to the subject since.

My criticisms of @mozilla plans for Firefox built in AI alt text generation aren't because of knee-jerk AI hatred or some ignorance. They are because I understand this to a breadth and depth extremely rare and I want acknowledgement of major issues being ignored 🧵…

screenshot of Twitter DMs with my alt text bot. I send an image of me with long brown hair in bands and cascading down each shoulder, wearing a rose and polkadot dress with a black sweater, standing on train tracks extending way off into the woods in a straight line behind me. I'm smiling a little and looking joyful. I say "describe". The bot responds 54% confidence: a woman standing on train tracks

Writing good #AltText relies on a crucial thing: context. That context has layers, whether it's the text on the post next to the image, the immediate conversation in which it appears, or the social conversation that it is a part of. All of that context informs what details are the most important to include and how those details are described. #Al has none of that context, and usually just lists things in the image. It can be a tool, but it's not good enough alone.Me behind a lectern on a stage motioning with my hands, a slide on a large screen behind me reads "the problem(s) with AI description: it doesn't understand context"

Wikipedia deletionists reached for LUnix.

It doesn't matter that this was an important technical feat - to my knowledge the first TCP/IP stack for C64/128 - true 8 bit networking before Contiki, before Wimodems. Recently it was even ported to NES.

I got wondering how much work it would be to compile s-expressions to #uxn, it turns out, not a lot.

As a test, I've only implemented `let`, but it's shockingly easy to map lisp-like syntax to the uxn assembly, I might push this further still.

We investigated performance degradation due to excessive crawling of Codeberg.

We often trace back such things to company websites that proudly list their key investors - but don't actually explain what they are doing (or why they need to crawl Codeberg more excessively than the crawlers of the major search engines combined).

It's probably not a use case we believe in anyway, so we blocked several large IP ranges today.

ALL HAIL THE #VECTREX, the greatest video game system in the history of the universe‼️

Don't see nearly enough Vectrex love here in #TheVideoGameLibrary, but leave it to Mark Bussler to give it the attention it deserves.

👉 thevideogamelibrary.org/book/a

The image is the cover of a book titled "All Hail the Vectrex: Ultimate Collector’s Review Guide" by Mark Bussler. The cover features a prominent image of the Vectrex, which is a classic home video game console and one of the few that used vector display technology.

The Vectrex system is shown with its distinctive built-in screen displaying the words "VECTREX GCE ENTERTAINING NEW IDEAS," which could be the startup screen or a promotional message. Below the screen, the console's control panel with buttons and dials is visible, and there's an overlay around the screen, which was a unique feature of the Vectrex, allowing for colored visuals on its monochrome display.

The background of the cover is a striking green with vertical stripes, which grabs attention and gives a retro vibe, fitting for a book about a vintage gaming system. The title "ALL HAIL THE VECTREX" is written in large, bold letters at the top, emphasizing the reverence and importance the author places on the Vectrex.

The ABC's of #unix . Hope this renders right :)

A is for awk, which runs like a snail, and
B is for biff, which reads all your mail.
C is for cc, as hackers recall, while
D is for dd, the command that does all.
E is for emacs, which rebinds your keys, and
F is for fsck, which rebuilds your trees.
G is for grep, a clever detective, while
H is for halt, which may seem defective.
I is for indent, which rarely amuses, and
J is for join, which nobody uses.
K is for kill, which makes you the boss, while
L is for lex, which is missing from DOS.
M is for more, from which less was begot, and
N is for nice, which it really is not.
0 is for od, which prints out things nice, while
P is for passwd, which reads in strings twice.
Q is for quota, a Berkeley-type fable, and
R is for ranlib, for sorting ar table.
S is for spell, which attempts to belittle, while
T is for true, which does very little.
U is for uniq, which is used after sort, and
V is for vi, which is hard to abort.
W is for whoami, which tells you your name, while
X is, well, X, of dubious fame.
Y is for yes, which makes an impression, and
Z is for zcat, which handles compression.

So one of the biggest businesses in the world that serves by far the most consumers in the non-smartphone computing department does something incredibly harmful and it seems like the main thing Linux users are picking up from this is "oh neat what a great new recruiting tool!"

Idk man. That feels a bit gross
