@benjaminkelley ended up with 5 QSOs. Lot of QRM, I think from EV chargers, but I'm not sure. Bands seemed in bad shape anyway. Shoulda brought FT8 with me. Oh well, still had fun.
I used to be KF0BRS@mastodon.radio, but I upgraded to Extra in Sept. 2022 and just got around to creating a new account here in Nov. 2023

Somebody help me out! I've got 2 QSOs at the Abraham Lincoln House and I've got about 20 minutes til I gotta head out.

@capheind looks like some kind of banking software? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenVMS
@k3fnb it sounds like a really useful tool
@brainofdane it was really interesting to me as a kid. I remember changing the tone of a buzzer by dragging wire leads across a heavily penciled piece of paper. Some sort of alarm as well. I was fascinated by that because it made a sound when a circuit was broken. Just basic transistor stuff. I remember the springs hurt my fingers though.
I'm sure I made a crystal radio as well, but I made a few of those as a kid.
@brainofdane @capheind different topic, but did y'all ever experience those circuit kits with springs sticking out of a cardboard box? I think my dad got it for me from RadioShack.
@capheind I think the youngest person to pass the Tech exam was...single-digits old. I don't know. So it's definitely possible for kids to pass the test already.
Of course just because it's possible doesn't mean it's likely most of them would.
A test for kids that goes over a little science and radio etiquette where you give them an FRS or GMRS radio afterwards might be fun though.
@capheind oh, I didn't realize it involved those PL tones. Just thought it was like 146.52 for other stuff.
Might go ahead and add that to my VX6, but I don't think there's a whole lot of adventuring happening in KC. There's a fair amount of PITA though.
@capheind is that mainly a California thing?
@Geojoek considering how bad ARRL got hacked they might wanna consider doing this differently.
@AF0AJ @Geojoek I was thinking of this one. Tom Waits https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWIR9mvf-IU
This coax honestly is not very good. What I /should/ do is upgrade from RG213/U to LMR400. But I had $20, and not $100. I get by with what I got.
I was planning to take more photos, but a lot of stuff was happening around the house and I just needed to get it done.
Tools used:
- box cutter
- Pana-Vise
- butane soldering iron (and solder)
- wrenches (I forget what size)
On Sunday, I cut the coax to my J-pole antenna with a hedge trimmer.
On Monday, I got some PL-259 connectors and a SO-239 bulkhead connector, put them on, and reconnected the cable(s). Also wrapped in self-amalgamating tape and electrical tape.
This 4 inch piece of cable should now be impervious to lawn implements.
@Geojoek idk what any of this means

We're aiming to be QRV around 11 AM - 12 PM Central and plan to stay on for several hours.
Hope to catch you in the log!
@Geojoek imagine how hard it would be with a handsaw?
