Here's my act of resistance: I made a one-page site that works entirely in your browser to generate a simple QR code. And that's all it does. You can download the HTML page and run it locally, even. Read the source; nothing up my sleeves. Just a QR code.

My offer to you -- I will continue to pay for the domain name and web hosting for it, myself. If you find it valuable, you can pay it back by creating your own useful thing for the world and releasing it for free. Let's take back the friendly web, one vexingly-monetized utility at a time!

I tried out Threads. Set up a private account, added a bunch of friends/acquaintances, plus some musicians, artists etc.

I spent 5m scrolling. There's one post by a person I actually follow. The rest were from accounts I don't follow - brands, influencers, YouTubers etc. I guess that's an improvement on conspiracy theorists and cryptospammers etc.

Meanwhile here my feed is wonky academics, writers, programmers, artists, activists and so on mostly posting about stuff they care about.

Unconscious bias training isn’t enough. Privileged people/powerful people need to be taught distress tolerance and cultural competency.

Jfc i feel old but just realized: if you’re younger than like 35-40 you basically have zero memory of life without the worldwide web (or what some people call “the internet”) because in 93/94 you were only 5-10 years old. Even scarier, if you’re younger than 25-30 you don’t remember a Googleless world. And holy shit: an ad-free web. It was about 98 when the first ads started appearing, IIRC. STUFF is REALLY NEW, people. And it can CHANGE. IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE THE WAY it is now.

Seems some people have taken to burning some vile plastic garbage at the same time that I usually head out for a walk, it's such a sensory assault for an autistic asthamatic like me that I don't even know where am once I've reached the garden :(

Just another day in a "low cost of living" country where I deserve to be paid less to live here.
