How close can you get to a major third in an equal-tempered scale with N notes? Here I mean a so-called 'just' major third: a frequency ratio of 5/4.

If you graph how close you can get, you see three 'strands' of dots.

Can you figure out why?

(I haven't drawn the results for low because for some the errors are huge. But N = 24 does no better and no worse than N = 12, or for that matter N = 3.)
