Designing things and teaching stuff in the American desert southwest. Days mostly spent listening to #EDM, but all about the #YachtRock. Em dash enthusiast. || Avatar by Colin Murdoch.
@SKleefeld Looks like an extensive collection of prints: https://www.nytimes.com/1985/12/29/nyregion/a-full-year-s-worth-of-art.html
They’ve been spun off and bought and sold (Travelers, I mean) many times since that article, but guess they still have the archive, calendar still comes out: https://www.travelersonlinestore.com/travelerscards/SKUDetailsTRV2FTCAL-2026.asp
The historical photograph titled Samurai, Yokohama, taken by the Italian-British photographer Felice Beato.
The photo was taken between 1863-1866, during Japan's Edo period, just before samurai class was abolished in late 1870s. It depicts an anonymous samurai holding a katana (long sword) and a fan.
Felice Beato lived and worked in Japan from 1862-1885 and documented country during a time of significant change. The original photograph is an albumen silver print from a glass negative.
@SKleefeld Not disagreeing with your point, my weird story about this is that Travelers Insurance, where both my parents worked, has (a? the? the largest? the only?) Currier & Ives collection, and put out art calendars that hung in our and our relatives’ houses all my childhood.
@sundeck Thanks for the reminder, it’s been sitting in a playlist, waiting for the time when I can concentrate on watching and listening.
On the fourth day of #oontzmas controlfreak gave to me. Track 4 Be Mine, 3 Memorabilia, 2 Cities in Dust, 1 Control I'm Here, and REPLICATE in a, uh, tree.
Yes, it's THAT Robyn.

It's a good thing tears never show in the pouring rain. Oof.
Be Mine - Robyn - 2005+ various releases
I LOVE ROBYN. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED ROBYN. I LOVE ROBYN'S BUBBLE GUM ADJACENT INDUSTRY OPPRESSION ERA. I LOVE HER TWO FINGERS IN THE AIR TO THE INDUSTRY ERAS, I LOVE ROBYN WITH RÖYKSOPP. I LOVE ROBYN.
Robyn is an absolute juggernaut of a writer, performer and a phenom at encapsulating emotive and temporal journeys music and art can take us.
There is zero even partially feasible reason that I should or could attempt to even be within 100m of a Robyn track!
Be Mine has quite a few interations and versions from releases to live. Every version is powerful as fuck even the sparsely instrumented ones because it's a good as fuck song. Unrequited love songs are a penny a tonne but this one is Vibranium!
My undisputed favourite version of Be Mine is the heavily arpeggiated and aggressive synth and drums arrangement for the Body Talk Tour [get to a video source and watch that right now!]. I latched onto that one and amplified the oontz. That entire tour show gets some of the most spirited top of the lungs "singing" when I'm on the tractor of all the songs in this collection.
@sundeck Greyhound names! Came up again (while we were driving the greyhound around) listening to A Hundred Days Off which has really grown on me over the years.
@amiserabilist @jcrabapple @Kierkegaanks Whole lotta TIL in here.
@Sykonee Wow, I remember this CD circulating around the office…

@RobertaFidora What’s the Pixefed account?
Back when I started all this, was disappointed that Mastodon/Fedi wasn’t quite as “all in one place” as I had hoped, but then came around to wanting to section off interests.

Comicraft and Swell Type out there proving we can still have printed type specimen books.
