@simon @tim @aleflavio

Well, if it's not spam, it's clearly spammy. I long ago added a filter to block those posts.

@tim @Peternimmo @janboddez

+1 for Jan's plugin. I've been using it for about 6 months and it works great. Super customizable. I'm grateful for it.

@jeff @mike I think the problem is that mastodon admins would then have to manage an email server. Is that true?

2023-04-27

@james Interestingly when I do a google search to fix this problem, this is the first WP related result I get: wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/ho

What is so interesting to me is that fixing the problem through code is their *first* suggestion. This is in contrast to all of their other articles that recommend plugins first.

I'm guessing the decision was made to have update related things be more noisy since not updating is a major reason WP sites are a security risk. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@ErikDee Amazing! What is done with the candle?

@joplinapp @nunesgh

It absolutely should not change for existing users. That would be *very* annoying.

I've been using Joplin for almost two years and I've never even thought about printing.

But I use the command palette almost every time I use Joplin.

In any case, users can change the shortcuts to whatever they want. Better to promote that feature than to change an existing shortcut key.

@arnandegans @ryan

Yep, I agree that is much better. However the internet is full of WP sites that owners rarely log in to.

But, yeah, it sucks for some people.

2023-04-15

@arnandegans @ryan

I know it may not be popular, but the #1 reason that WP sites are hacked is because they don't get updated. So I think the decision was made that the world is better off if security updates are on by default.

@RAPIDPUNCHES Am I the only one who assumed shark-girl ate the real girl? Except for the earring?

2023-02-17

@moira

Yep, either a child theme or site specific plugin. My understanding is that the only reason to choose one over the other is if the new behaviour is closely tied with the specific theme you are using, or if you would want the same behaviour even if you switched to a different theme.

And you wouldn't want to modify a theme either in case the developer of the theme made upgrades. Same concept behind not modding core, really.

But as far as the code goes, it's identical.

2023-02-16

@moira

I'm guessing that including formatting in excerpts can lead to lots of unexpected problems. Like, if you cut off at a certain number of words, then all the closing tags would have to be computed.

I think getting a computer to do what you want might be more complicated than it seems. But it's worth exploring.

I wonder if there would be a way using css to cut off more than, say 30rem of a post and then just display the whole post. But then the read more button would be missing…

2023-02-16

@mythologyandhistory One thing that just occurred to me is that if 90% of a museum's collection is not on display, then why is repatriation not a simple thing? If it's not important enough to show, then how can it be important enough to keep? And if all the non-displayed items were returned to their countries of origin, then wouldn't it be *easier* to do research since one would simply go to the country of origin to see it all?

2023-02-03

@timrichards Ah, that worked! Thanks for taking the time to point that out!

2023-02-03

@timrichards Nope. I click on the join us and I am told I have to pay/give credit card:

2023-02-03

@timrichards Is there a non-paywall link?

2023-01-27

#IFTTT just announced that they are reducing the number of free apps from four to two. What low impact methods are you using to post from #WordPress to #Tumblr and #Twitter? I'd like something that doesn't involve a plugin.

@3x10to8mps I think you may have missed a setting. There is an option to either show the filtered message or not. Just click don't show ever.

It has a purpose. If you are unsure about the effectiveness of a filter, or if you want to decide if you see it based on who said it. Like, you would still want to see the post if it was a friend.

2023-01-25

#WordNerd, #Editing and #Editor friends, can anyone recommend resources I can use to justify avoiding using "one" in informal writing? For example "One should avoid the use of the word 'one' when 'you' would work just as well."

I'm training a very talented non-native English speaker to try to make their language not sound so stuffy.

2023-01-21

@paulomalley @cporter Yep, I'll also say that you shouldn't put hashtags in a huge thread like that because it blasts your replies into everyone's home feed that follows them.

Threads are fine, just don't hashtag them. Maybe even consider making them unlisted.

2023-01-17

@sfierbaugh @jeff

I really agree with the "lets create something better" idea.

I know "search" seems like a given, but it's not. And technical design decisions have an impact. So I'm in favour of letting the Mastodon experiment play out a bit longer.

But it's true that if you are a journalist looking to do research on Mastodon then you're out of luck. You'll just have to do what people did before Twitter. I'll be happy to not read headlines about who's lighting up Mastodon.
