Black-or-white strawmen arguments drive me crazy. There is a world of things we can do between “pretend COVID doesn't exist” and “lock ourselves away forever.” In fact, if we did those things--safe air in public places, masks & behavior changes when COVID surges--we could control COVID & save the health of millions.

The OECD average is 5 beds per 1000 population
The decline in beds is a long run trend, is exacerbated by rise in total population & in aging demographics & represents significant policy, political & strategic failure.
All this made much worse by Tory austerity that has critically weakened the fabric of our public health & social care systems
