Loving this shot I got of a Flame Skimmer where the shadow cast by the wings is orange. I did not notice that when I took the shot and was really pleased when I saw it during editing. #Photography #Dragonflies #Odonata #CanonR5
If you're an Apollo user on Reddit, I hope you'll decline the refund offer. The developer is closing down the app not because it wants to, but because Reddit is slamming the door on 3rd-party client apps. Please don't blame the developer for an action taken by Reddit and Advance, the media behemoth that controls it. https://mastodon.social/@christianselig/110623957828995693
A couple of shots of a Say’s Phoebe taken in central Oregon. Wonderful bird. #Photography #Birds #Oregon #Birding
Firearms are now the leading cause of death for Americans ages 24 years and under. It really, truly, genuinely, does not have to be this way.
Y’all, the Penzey’s spices “About” page goes HARD.
https://www.penzeys.com/shop/about-republicans/
“we’re done pretending the Republican Party’s embrace of cruelty, racism, Covid lies, climate change denial, and threats to democracy are anything other than the risks they legitimately are. If you need us to pretend you are not creating the hurt you are creating in order for you to continue to be our customer, I’m sad to say you might be happier elsewhere.”
I'm super disappointed on how a small, loud group of people have been abusive towards individuals in this conversation, particularly those that are upset at willful misreadings of the draft. I disagree with parts of the policy, but yelling at people that they aren't listening at the community, when this is precisely to gather feedback, feels incredibly discouraging and honestly makes me want to walk away, and I am not even in the receiving end. Can't imagine how those who are are feeling.
I'm going to echo @ekuber here.

I am incredibly disappointed in how some people in the #rust #rustlang have been reacting to the trademark draft. It shows in incredible amount of naïveté and just general ignorance, possibly even willful, and if nothing else, a willingness to harm others just because someone moved your cheese in a way you didn't like.
Get your priorities straight, people. Nothing being argued about here is worth harassing or otherwise hurting others over. You're allowed to have a level head, give gentle feedback, and wait for the next cycle and see what got addressed. Have more faith in these folks, because they care enough about our community to spend so much of their time and their emotional energy dealing with people like you.
Can I just ask that the #RustLang community remain calm and focused on supporting the growth and adoption of this language, which I maintain is a revolution in programming languages? Getting wound up about having to ask permission to print your Rust stickers for profit is not a constructive path toward helping the community. Rust is growing up. It needs grown up rules that maintain it's authenticity. I am certain the foundation will evolve the policy over time, so please be part of the solution.
@lethalbit back in the day, it was all about the half-of-the-price of an IBM that got folks excited. I don't collect anything past the early 90's, and no PC stuff. It was an interesting time in the industry with so many companies trying to steal even small percentages of IBM PC sales. It was a kind of gold rush and I suppose the draw today of these vintage devices is to have a piece of that gold rush. The series “Halt and Catch Fire" does a reasonable job of capturing the vibe of the times.
Added a TK-II to my #Atari 800XL over the weekend and can now use a standard PS2 keyboard with it. This is definitely cool. Got lucky with my POKEY chip being socketed so no solder/desolder required.
BTW if you think PS2 refers to a PlayStation 2 you’re gonna have to dig a little deeper into #RetroComputing history to grok this post. Dive in!
A brief list of less problematic #retrocomputing YouTube channels for those who are uncomfortable with the public behaviour of The 8-Bit Guy:
• Techmoan (Mat does more audio than computers, but very retro, and a cool dude)
• Mr. Lurch's things (Jason is a great guy)
• RMC (Neil is also a great dude)
• Retro Recipes (I'll be honest, I find Christian's whole vibe a bit over polished and highly produced, but I also think he puts in a lot of honest effort and really loves retro systems -- plus he was in two Star Wars films)
• Adrian's Digital Basement (Basically the Mr. Rogers of Retrocomputing, I love this dude)
• Usagi Electric (The dude restores vintage mini-computers, how awesome is that?)
• More Fun Making It (Also a cool dude, and his whole vibe is just fun to watch)
• Veronica Explains (She's great too, very friendly and informative)
• Jan Beta (Pure old-school retro nerdery)
• Noel's Retro Lab
• Technology Connections
• Action Retro
• Ms. Mad Lemon
Great series from @happyhippie on using the #Rustlang Bevy game development platform. Really well done and I can't wait to put my learnings to work!
@rayotron @f_dion I've never had good luck with the cream, it always leaves streaking. I use liquid H2O2 at around 12% concentration (get it on amazon by the gallon). I fill a clear plastic tote (~30qt) with enough to immerse what I am brightening, then wrap the tote in aluminum foil, shiny side facing in. I then place the lights on the clear lid shining into the tote. Take 8-10 hours tops to get really great results.
Why Rust for serverless/cloud native apps? Choose 9/9:
- Cost efficiency
- Low latency
- Memory efficiency
- Memory safety
- Environmental sustainability
- Fewer runtime errors
- Easy deployments
- Developer happiness
- Customer happiness
If you think the US needs to ban TikTok because the Chinese government can run influence ops on it, just wait until you find out how easy it is to influence ops on platforms YOU DON'T EVEN OWN--even wholesome American platforms like our beloved Facebook.
