Just like last year, the Yellow-crowned Night Heron stopped at the retention pond by the freeway entrance.

As a consequence of the on-going destruction of many, many trees that used to blanket the hillside near my house is that the habitat of many birds has been disrupted.

As a result, owls that probably lived in those trees are now trying to establish households in our neighborhood instead.

This great horned owl seemed paralyzed by the incessant harassment from robins, Steller's jays, & other longer-term residents.

In this photograph, a shell-shocked looking great horned owl is sitting on a bare branch, surrounded by bare branches. Hard to see, but there around the periphery, are a Steller's jay and a robin shrieking at the owl. It is dusk and the light is brownish. Hard to keep the focus.

Another #birb from yesterday.

My friend and I were sitting in the back garden of the coffeehouse near my home where there is a small water feature there that is a big hit with the neighborhood birds. This oriole had just taken a bath in the water and was drying off in the sun.

My friend hadn't learned to identify orioles by their sounds yet, so I was happy to point them out. Sitting back there was not quite as relaxing as our usual foray to the lake, but we only had about two hours to hang out. Also the coffee house doesn't seem to care if you sit there and you haven't ordered a drink from them. So it's almost a free third space, in a way. (My friend did order a drink.)

There was also a bird making anither sound -- I didn't pull out my Merlin ID app to identify it because it was making me laugh my head off -- that sounded to me like Spock walking in the TOS episode "Spock's Brain." It went "tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick tick" for a bit, and then started ticking even faster. I looked at my friend and giggled, "Spock, running!"

(I have been deeply immersed in the #StarTrek universe lately, so everything reminds me of Star Trek right now.)

I wish my phone had a better digital zoom, but here we are. 🙄

Amidst some quite uncomfortable iron outdoor furniture, a beautiful orangeish-red Baltimore Oriole is sitting fluffed up on the back of a patio chair, drying off after its bath. It is surrounded by pine and hardwood trees and is backlit by the afternoon sun.

Two Notes on a Branch

This wasn’t the image I intended to work on this morning—I moved it to my working folder by mistake. But once it was there, I decided to follow its lead. The photo captures a house finch couple (Haemorhous mexicanus) perched quietly on a branch, as if pausing to gather their thoughts together.

The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Take a look:

"Perched like notes on a musical staff, the house finch couple rests along a slender, diagonally arching branch, suspended against a lush backdrop of mottled green leaves and sunlight. The male, perched above, wears a vibrant crown and chest of rosy red, feathers flecked like watercolor against his mottled brown wings and streaked flanks. Below him, the female balances in quiet contrast—her plumage soft and earthy, cloaked in warm browns and gentle stripes, her gaze turned upward toward her mate.

The scene is intimate, almost whispered—filtered through a soft lens that bathes the pair in a peaceful glow, as if the world has hushed around their shared stillness. The background fades into a velvety blur, so nothing distracts from their quiet companionship on this fragile perch." - Copilot

Seen today next to the bay in Ocean City, MD, I saw a half-dozen of these birds. I suspect they were juvenile Red-winged Blackbirds. Can you confirm or deny this ID, please? They were about the right size and tho it's hard to see, they had some streaking on their breast/belly.
#WhatsThisBird #birding

A blue sky is criss-crossed with many dark twigs and small branches. One small bird is perched and seen from behind. It is very dark and is mainly a silhouette. In the center of the image is a similar bird, facing left. It has dark gray or black head, with a black bill and black eye. Because it's in shadow, the belly and breast of the bird is very dark, but may be slightly streaked. The rest of the bird is dark gray or black. Some gray-green lichen is splotched about the larger branches.
