A good example of this is my most recently, currently at 3,000+ shares and still climbing (see screenshot).
I could not post this informative post on Mastodon Dot Social. The 500-charecter limit would not allow for it, and the best I could have done was a screenshot.
But I digress. I am moving my reserved account to @Linux because 1) it is outside the United States and 2) it will better give me the freedom to both express and inform people.
Additionally, Mastodon Dot Social had a limited 500-character limit.
Some of my most shared and helpful post, go well beyond 500 character. And by well shared, I mean 1,000–12,000 people sharing the same post, despite being more than 500 characters.
In that regard, Mastodon Dot Social, does not better reflect my needs. It was OK if I wanted lengthy threads, but I prefer to say what I have to say, all at once, when possible. 1 simple post instead of many.
@Linux has a 2000-character limit
This account, here on Mastodon Dot Social, was only my reserved account (back up account). I keep a backup for the unexpected (for example, site downtime).
Today, I am moving my reserved account from Mastodon Dot Social to Mastodon Dot Au. @Linux
Mastodon Dot Social, while based out of Germany, continues to use USA based web hosting. I am trying to migrate away from US-jurisdiction whenever possible, since the future is uncertain (we have a racist, fascist government).
Happy 7th anniversary of becoming an official W3C standard, ActivityPub!

We're creating something truly special here with the fediverse, and I am so thankful for everyone who contributes to it, whether with your time, money, or just by sharing your thoughts, your creations, your silly little jokes. Keep it up!
The New York Times reports that Trump is making the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board de facto inoperable. This punches the first major hole in EU-US data transfers agreement (TADPF).
Using US Cloud providers could quickly violate the GDPR (even in the European Commission's view).

We have a new release for you. Vivaldi 7.1 on Windows, Mac and Linux.
My favorite new feature is the weather widget. I have added 4 of them. Allows me to see weather and time in 4 different places.
Enjoy!

@tom_andraszek I would argue there are many Fedi sites run by people who have no business running a Fedi site.
今天,我完全理解了这个信息(不管是给谁的)。我也有同感。我很同情你。
The other Fedi site I belonged to crashed and this one, the whole post does not fit.
Sorry, for the image.
See my draft "Fairer Federation" on how to fix this.
Actually implementing it would take a bit of effort. Just look at all the discussions of Announcing an Activity vs an Object for how messy this topic can get. ActivityPub really made this type of topic hell by not providing sequence diagrams and poorly specifying things (like how does sharing actually work?).
Current mood:
Annoyed.
Very annoyed.
You cannot even do good here.
And you wonder why so many people are still on Twitter or Reddit or whatever.
The wonderful thing about the Fedi is you cannot toss money at people to get what you want.
The bad thing about the Fedi is you cannot toss money at people to get what you want.
Because I'm more than willing to help sponsor a site and I have in the past, but damn.

Today, I was trying to point out the nonsense my job is doing (I work for Facebook), and the site crashed. I cannot even warn people about the nonsense going on.
1) 1,000+ character limit
2) Outside the USA
3) Not hosted by Hetzner *
4) Stable
5) Is OK with freedom of speech, but NOT hate speech
That is all I want.
* A lot of sites in 2024 found out Hetzner was not exactly LGBTQ+ friendly, and took down sites with photos or drawings of women/men kissing.
When on Twitter, I had over 1 million followers.
On the Fedi, anytime I actually start to stand out, the site I am using crashes, or the admin has some kind of emotional meltdown, or the software development turns out to be thieves, or some legal nonsense (not involving me) comes to light.
I have moved from Fedi site to Fedi site to Fedi site, and I'm just annoyed. I have no interest in starting my own site, because I want to belong to a community, without policing people.

I welcome anyone to share the photo. You can even take credit. Truly, my goal is only to get the word out.
