@ai6yr good old Boney.
"The lesson of Iraq is that it can happen here. We are not immune: The entire nation can lose touch with reality. We saw all this happen with our own eyes. Let’s face it now: We all knew it was a lie. Some people just wanted to believe it or cynically didn’t care. We went to war and killed hundreds of thousands for something that was just not real. If the jingoism, militarism, and bureaucratic machinery of the Bush era somehow fuses with the rowdy, populist hate-mongering of Trumpism, then the question of fascism will be settled: we will unambiguously have it."

The Problem With Police Reform Is That Police Already Know It's Bad To Beat People To Death
Like most flavors of police reform, these measures presume that the police officers who kill do so only because they simply don't know what else to do, because they haven't been trained to do anything else. It presumes that they won't use a chokehold if they are told to not use chokeholds. It presumes that if we just tell police officers "Hey, stop murdering people who are no kind of actual threat to you," they will stop doing that. It assumes a certain amount of good faith that is not necessarily applicable to the kinds of police officers who kill people. https://www.wonkette.com/tyre-nichols-police-reform

I hope there's a whistleblower at the New York Times and/or FBI who will reveal the source or sources who got the Paper of Record to help Trump win the presidency and derail the Clinton campaign.

The metastasizing FBI scandal has many facets, but unraveling the Times' role is crucial for journalism -- and the paper has stonewalled relentlessly since 2016.
Part of what makes police brutality and racism so terrible is that, unlike other risks, it can't be escaped.
I can choose a safe car to guard against crashes. I can exercise for heart health.
But there is nothing I can do to guard against racist, violent cops. Even being an attorney who is wearing a suit doesn't help, as I've been racially profiled on my way to court, and physically grabbed by courthouse security on multiple occasions.
Charles Blow is angry, and he should be. I had hope, back in spring-summer 2020, that we'd maybe reached a tipping point. Alas, seems not.

I think this is dead on. Journalists hold Democrats to unachievable standards, while lauding any Republican who isn't an obvious psychopath.

It's all schtick but it is pretty funny that they guys who think the future president inviting and receiving illegal help from the worst dictator on earth is no big deal but Adam Schiff writing emails that were ignored is the biggest scandal ever.
Deep-red North Dakota is another state where Republican homophobia is on steroids right now, with a slew of laws targeting trans people now before the legislature. Judd Legum and Rebecca Crosby look at the attempt of ND Rep. Mike Leflor to remove books with LGBTQ characters from libraries — and how major corporations, through their donations, are right on board, even when they say they promote diversity.
UPDATE: This is also happening in Duval County, FL.
A principal sent this note: "We are being asked to restrict classroom libraries...sadly you will need to remove student access...I will be the one with a felony if we are found in violation...I wish I was making this all up"

The market has failed. Philanthropy can't do it. The public good that is local news needs another support system. Now there's an alliance calling for public policy solutions. Rebuild Local News it is called. Their ideas:
* A tax credit for consumers to subscribe to or donate to local news
* A tax credit for small businesses to advertise in local news
* A tax credit for local news organizations to hire and retain local journalists
