I didn’t intend to become disheartened by an early-morning scroll through Reddit this morning. But I am. These posts were commenting on an observation that the far-right convoy crowd is still milling around Parliament Hill with their F* Carney flags, still spewing their garbage.
It’s apparent that algorithmically-driven social media is the principal cause of the divisiveness in our society. I have no idea what can be done about it. But something has to change.

I had two delightful, inspiring events this weekend. Friday night, I was a special guest at Edmonton’s annual Queer Prom, a safe, inclusive, empowering dance party and festival for #LGBQT teens. Seeing the kids in their wild costumes and gowns, dancing and singing their hearts out in defiance of hate and exclusion, filled me with joy. And Pink Pony Club is ringing in my ears. #Edmonton #yeg #TransRightsAreHumanRights

There is a subset of people in the world who think it's an act of bigotry to point out the supreme hypocrisy of a nation that was established to provide refuge for a group of oppressed people who were subject to genocide, using its own military might to subject *another* oppressed group of people to genocide.

If the comparison with a well known genocidal fascist regime of the past is so upsetting, maybe you should just sit with that feeling for a bit and reconsider who and what you support.

@Snowshadow

I give terrible advice and should largely be ignored, or at least viewed as comic relief. 🙂

Alberta is 13% of the population with 15% of the national GDP, yet they believe they, and they alone, should run the shop.

And with money almost literally bubbling from the ground, they still end up with the most expensive electricity by far, a healthcare system in absolute crisis, infrastructure that can't keep up with demand and severely lacking maintenance, all the while they're right back into deficit spending again.

Of all the provincial leaders, she'd be the last one whose advice I'd take seriously. Yes, even including Ford.

2) They don't realize the diverse, prosperous economy Carney is building will elevate their standard of living, help them get a house etc. Carney just didn't paint it in plain language like PP.

I get Carney isn't the kind to get into gutter politics. He wouldn't bring up PPs shady, manipulative past. Perhaps it was a fault of the Lib campaign for not pointing this out, but I really think the press should have picked up on it. The omission probably cost Liberals their majority. /End

Two points about the younger voters who supported the Conservatives don't realize:

1) They don't remember the terrible Harper Gov't years. The cuts to Veterans, Women's groups, Stats Canada, environment protections, the assaults on the personal rights that had to go to the Supreme Court for reinstatement. The gagging of civil servants. Etc. Etc.

I find it remarkable PP was able to say Carney was 'more of the same' when in fact PP is the person who is 'more of the same' /2

What, did you think I was fucking bluffing? #Elxn45 #ElbowsUp #CanPoli

Hi Brad

Congratulations are in order, as we find ourselves once again with you as the MP for Saskatoon West. Today I'm serving a reminder that your job in Parliament will be to represent and further the interests of the people in this riding, not those of your party leader. For years Poilievre campaigned on grievance politics meant to stoke division, fashioning himself off of Trump and the MAGA movement in the states. As a country we soundly rejected that behavior. You now have the opportunity to try a new tack and build your own political identity rather than acting as an empty megaphone for his rhetoric. Perhaps you can even be part of the solution finding and elevating a new party leader with a more humanist outlook. Meanwhile, you're going to be working across party lines with a host of Saskatchewan NDP MLAs who represent these communities. Familiarize yourself with them.

Saskatoon is a diverse and vibrant city, full of people of all creeds, colors, backgrounds, and gender identities. There will be no tolerance for Poilievre styled attacks on the unhoused, those struggling with mental health and addictions, our queer community or newcomers to Canada. These are the underserved population that need our help the most, and our tax dollars are paying you to advocate for them. Here's what we want to see from you in session:Housing

During an all candidates forum at Camponi Housing, the Liberal candidate Chad Eggerman extolled the virtues of Finland's approach to Housing First where finding safe spaces for unhoused people is the first priority. The NDP Candidate Rachel Loewen Walker added that building homes using the accelerator fund must be done in such a way that prioritizes affordability, and keeping them out of market so that they aren't then immediately snatched up by corporate landlords. We need rent control, and wrap around supports for the unhoused so that they have access to the resources they need to navigate our systems. We can all claim that we don't criminalize homelessness, but we do need to see things like drug use, petty theft, and encampments as signals that these people were failed by the government, rather than treat them like criminals and punish them further. It costs much less to house people than it does to jail them.

Provincially, the Sask Party's cabinet doesn't include a minister whose portfolio covers these issues. Your stakeholders will instead be Mayor Cynthia Block, and Saskatoon Westview MLA April ChiefCalf; Shadow Minister of HousingHealthcare

A major pain point during the Provincial Campaign, our health care system is under stress and the Sask Party is failing to address the needs of our people. Following Alberta's lead, the suspected plan is that after enough mismanagement, privatization begins to look like the alternative. We don't want that, because we have people who won't be able to afford it and a two-tiered health care system is not in the spirit of Canada at all. Ideally we'd see things like mental health and dental care rolled into universal health care. Realistically, the fight is to simply get the system back to working and prevent our provincial governments from ruining it. From parliament, that means making sure we get the funding we need, making sure it's spent responsibly, and holding premiers accountable for squandering those resources.

For a dialog on what's needed, your contacts are Battlefords MLA Jeremy Cockrill; Minister of Health, mirrored by Saskatoon Fairview MLA Vicki MowatHuman Rights

Here is where the CPC really needs to button up and repair the damage done by Poilievre's MAGA styled campaign. Our indigenous, immigrant, and queer communities have each been attacked early and often by far right rhetoric. Casting them as outsiders and blaming them for societal issues is textbook fascism and we will not stand for it. Since your job is to represent us - all of us - you're going to need to make it clear that you won't stand for it either. To repair the damage done by this campaign you're going to need to take time to get to know these people, learn what they need, and advocate for them on the floor. Bills that harm these populations need to be condemned and struck down immediately.

The Sask Party cabinet has no portfolio for this. I'd recommend reaching out instead to Regina North MLA Jacqueline Roy, Shadow Minister of Human Rights.

Moving forward, you'll likely see my name on the occasional petition from groups like LeadNow. Take them as direction, rather than invitation to debate. I'd rather you spend your energy working on our country than crafting individualized responses. Once again, congratulations on holding your seat. We're expecting a much more productive government without Poilievre.

Yeah, hopefully this doesn't make Canadians complacent or forget that Canada has a lot of idiots who saw Trump, saw Poilivere, and voted Conservative anyway.

It wasn't the closest election, but the margin should still be enough to remind Canadians not to fuck around with pretending conservatism isn't an inevitable road to fascism or that you can meet conservatives halfway.

Conservatism; not even once.

Gonna get ahead of this now. You’re gonna see a bunch of disgruntled CPC voters tmrw sharing maps of Canada covered in Conservative blue. But here’s your friendly reminder:

🌍 LAND DOES NOT VOTE. PEOPLE DO.

Just because massive near-empty blocks of land doesn’t mean there’s been a political landslide. It means…well, tundra and trees don’t get ballots.

We vote by population, not by hectares. A downtown Toronto riding with 120,000 people counts just as much as a rural riding the size of Mexico.
