Veel gelezen in een maand!
Another book I finished in March for the Middle Earth Road Trip Readathon: "In Name of the Queen" by artist Nicolette Berendsen from https://hoofdkantoorbijzaken.com/ . This Dutch non-fiction book combines an ABC of facts about bees with beautiful collages. The writing is humorous and although I mostly picked this up because of the illustrations, I also learned a thing or two about bees!🐝

This is probably my favourite thrift shop find to date: Arthur of Albion by John Matthews and illustrated by Pavel Tatarnikov. It has been on my shelf for a couple of years now, but I finally picked it up in March for the Middle Earth Road Trip Readathon. The book contains a collection of short retellings of stories surrounding King Arthur and the knights of the round table, alternated with pages that present some facts about particular elements of the stories, such as mythological creatures, weapons and the creation of Camelot. While the book doesn't go very indepth, it definitely got me excited again about reading more Arthurian tales and the illustrations are absolutely beautiful!

Mijn repertoire is breed.

Delen mag!

- Liesbeth List
Prachtig die illustraties🤩
I struggle to translate the title of this book, something along the lines of "On the road and so many beautiful things". It does sound a bit better in Dutch, although I don't think the title flows very well. I do like the illustrations though!

This book reminded me a bit of The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse (every time I write this title I have to look up the order), in the sense that there is not a very clear storyline and sentiments and illustrations seem to be more important.

The illustrations in this book are simpler, but the book as a whole feels more meditative to me, with a focus on a journey towards the top of a mountain and all the feelings we may encounter on the way. I only wish that so many of the expressions weren't followed by "said the darkness / said the morning / said the clouds". In some cases it worked and in others it didn't, and after a while it started to feel a bit gimmicky.

Mickey 17?
Congratulations!
My goal was to go to the library and return more books than I would borrow, but not quite surprisingly that plan failed😅 At least most of the books I got are fairly quick reads, such as a few picture books and this one, "On the road and so much beauty", which is probably inspired by The Boy the Mole the Fox and the Horse. Especially with these quick reads it's so easy to tell myself "oh, one more doesn't matter..."

Three books lying on top of each other. The cover of the top one show a watercolour landscape of a path leading through grass towards the woods. Above the trees a blue and pink sky and a mountain to the right. The title reads: "Onderweg en zoveel moois" and the author's name is Rozemijn Aalpoel. The two books below are only partially visible. The one in the middle shows a part of a green garden and a red flower to the right. Only the green edges of the book at the bottom are visible.
I haven't read this one, thanks for mentioning it :) I feel like the majority of the climate books I've read don't seem to take the threat too seriously (like, we need to change some things, but it can't be too expensive blablabla), so it would be good to read a book that really goes a bit further when it comes to dropping emissions. Going on my to read list :)
Oh, this one looks very interesting! Definitely going on my to read list! Thank you :)

Welkom !
The Climate Book is on my shelf! I just need to get around to it. I think it is honestly just the size of the book that intimidates me, it doesn't actually seem to be that long and divided up into short chapters😅 But I have added the others to my to read list! Thanks so much!
I had never heard of this one, thanks for sharing! It seems rather intense (both depressing and long), so I'll have to see when I'm in the right mood for this. It seems to have great reviews though! Thanks again :)
One of my goals for this year is to read more books about the climate crisis. I picked up this Dutch books at the library a while ago and today I had to return it so I finally finished it. The title translates to "Apparent temperature" and it is a collection of four interviews with Dutch weather presenters about their thoughts on climate change.

I thought it was a pretty recent book, but it turned out the be written in 2018. Maybe (quite likely) the people interviewed have since then changed some of their opinions and maybe even changed some things in their personal lives. Reading this now, they seem far too optimistic about the government taking the climate crisis seriously and also some of their personal "sacrifices" seem very minimal, such as "only flying once a year for going on a holiday".

So this one may be a bit outdated, but it still reminded me of how important the fight against climate change still is. Even when it is no longer possible to actually stop the climate from changing, at least there will be more time to adapt and the effects will hopefully be less serious.

What is a book about the climate crisis that you would recommend?

Yeah I think you make a good point! Especially with self help books the author is often drawing from personal experience and then the line between a guide book and memoir sometimes becomes a little too thin. I'm guessing novellas are probably more expensive to publish, but they do exist so I wish it would also be more common for self-help books😅
My first read for the Middle Earth Road Trip Readathon: "The route to happiness", which is about your relationship with different people in your life. I am reading it for the second prompt "Samwise's potato plot: a book that will aid in your personal growth / learning".

While I do enjoy reading self help books every now and then, they can be a bit hit or miss for me. Sometimes these books seem unnecessarily long; I much prefer a short book that presents one idea in a very clear way than a more regular sized book that is actually full of repetition or unnecessary side notes. Other times the book reads more like a brochure for some course the author is trying to sell, which is even more annoying. I do usually get something out of these books though, even if it is just a reminder of something I already knew.

So far I'm enjoying "De geluksroute" though, but I'm not too far in yet. What is a self help book that you really enjoyed or found helpful?
