The highlight of our day out was this little bee (a nomad bee, we think), who spent two whole hours sitting on @lemondisco's hat, riding around with us as we walked from York towards Bishopthorpe. It even stayed on the hat while we ate our sandwiches, and only eventually flew off when some little flies started bothering it. What a cutie! It felt like having a special guest on our walk :blobaww:

Bees can fly backwards…and hover!

This is down to the fact that they have evolved to fly using the more advanced mechanism of flight termed ‘indirect flight’.
The more primitive mechanism being ‘direct flight’.

Although it may appear that #bumblebees have only two wings they actually have four.
The smaller rear wings are attached to the larger front wings by ‘hooks’.
Bumblebee wings are part of the exoskeleton.

As a beekeeper you should never say "things seem back to normal" when thinking about how it's been a week since you checked the hives and cleared swarm cells.

That damn West hive again. I heard the dreaded buzzing, saw them gathering up in the top of the cypress again..., and sort of all over the place. Finally spotted a cluster in the cypress. Was inside for 5 minutes, came back out, buzzing again! Cluster gone, bees going back in the hive. Fire drill complete.

Leafcutter bees are back. They don't mind me near the flowers, but they're camera shy. This one was sweet to gift one photo

A small black and gray bee looks right at camera as it sits on the top of a white yarrow flowerhead. A few yellow pollen grains stick to its antenna. Background is soft blur of garden greens

The mason bees near my rain garden have some great mud tunnels going. #Bees #NatureLovers

Picture of a bamboo tube bee house taken from an angle. Most of the tubes are covered with tan mud. The house is hanging on a brown stained fence and there is a branch from a Silky Dogwood in front of the house.

Earlier this week I noticed that one of the Georgia mason bees (Osmia georgica) at the front-yard insect hotel had capped off her nest. They use masticated leaves and nectar. Not sure what the white things are. She's since moved on to another paper straw. So busy! #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #bees #insects #pollinators #osmia
