With a total solar #eclipse in Exmouth Australia this week, we got to thinking about how (and how well) humans have predicted eclipses throughout history.
@aaron and I wrote an article to shed some light (on knowing when it’ll be dark!)

Despite almost every Australian city being filled with seagulls, today I saw a baby seagull for the very first time!!
Today is the day that I graduate from the #SuperstarsofSTEM program. It has been an incredible two years, with opportunities to stand on stages, chat with media, and meet so many people across the scientific and political spectrum.
It’s been a true privilege being part of this community of #WomenInSTEM, and there’s no doubt we’ll continue to lean on each other going forward.
All the best to the next cohort - I hope I get the chance to meet as many of you as possible!!
Depressing #discoveryproject #DP23 #grant outcomes announced today for maths — 27 projects funded; only 3 led by women. Not even 12%. These numbers seem to be getting worse. How does anyone think this is acceptable? Most of these teams have no women at all
Hey Team!
This is the account for Avid Research where I'll share announcements about new episodes of my podcast (Australian STEM career interviews) and career advice I get from interviewees.
If you're curious about what people in STEM careers actually do then follow along!
I've also run #SciCommSeptember and #MySciMay over on the old blue bird and I'll be looking to see if that will work here too.
Will share #STEMcareer inspo, #careeradvice , a bit about #STEM and #SciComm too!

Congrats to all successful researchers in the Discovery Projects 2023 round.
Thinking of all those who didn't receive funding too. Many of the unsuccessful apps were, no doubt, highly deserving of funding. Our researchers deserve so much better. https://twitter.com/ARC_Tracker/status/1595630711033036800

Incredible what expertise in #ImageProcessing, #DataReduction, and #SoftwareDevelopment can get you.
Recognise the initial #JWST image on the left? Check out the faint light in the newly processed image on the right, created by @aaron and the #ICRAR JWST team!

Have ended the evening abuzz after celebrating the Australian 2022 Prime Ministers Awards for Science #pmprizes at Parliament House! So many new people to meet and chat with, and a giddying delight to spend some time with the #SuperstarsofSTEM amongst the glitz and glamour!
A huge congratulations to each of the award winners - I have come away feeling oh so inspired!
@NikoSarcevic I feel those feels so much….
Today’s Little #penguin fact. Often prior to egg laying, female Little penguins need to supplement with shells and rocks for an added calcium boost. After the second egg has been laid, the leftover shell grit can sometimes be found regurgitated just outside of the burrow (pictured). This shell gritting behaviour peaks 3 - 5 days prior to the eggs being laid but can actually occur any time of the year & be done both by males and females whenever they might be low on calcium.
@paulawasiak how… Tasty 😛
welcome to @ARC_Tracker the underground and highly effective accountability mechanism we have in Australian Higher Education Grant making.
#introduction post! And what better way than to announce that I am officially part of the 2023/24 #SuperstarsofSTEM program! This program is run by #Science and #Technology #Australia and equips 60 women and non-binary #stem experts from across the country with advanced communication skills - for schools, the stage, and all forms of media. The aim is to smash gender barriers and increase STEM participation by girls, women and non-binary folk by making current experts visible everywhere. As a giant #penguin nerd, I can’t wait to share more stories with you all and hopefully inspire the next generation of said penguin nerds.
@Constababble hi Lee! I’m an astronomer based in Perth, working on big galaxy redshift surveys, and also one of the 2021/22 #SuperstarsofSTEM - excited to see the momentum building on this platform!
So excited to see the new cohort of #SuperstarsofSTEM announced today in Australia! This program is about empowering us to embrace, and make opportunities for ourselves. But more than anything, the community built as part of this program is a tidal wave, lifting the boats of all #womeninSTEM. It’s a joy taking part. Very excited to see it grow!

Super excited to finally be able to share that I have been selected as one of Australia’s #SuperstarsOfSTEM for 2023-24 🎉
In this program, 60 diverse scientists and professionals receive training and mentorship to become top-quality science media correspondents and science communicators—improving representation across science-related media in Australia.
