@endrift Ah frick, I just migrated from home social. I did try to get into treehouse systems but unfortunately couldn't as I didn't know anyone that could invite me.
By the way, would you mind giving me an invite? 😉

I just finished reading "The #Rust Programming Language", a.k.a "the book".
Exactly two weeks ago I started learning it to solve a bug in uutils (which I fixed!), and today I reached the end of the final chapter! 🥳
I am now officially a #Rustacean and a proud one too! Why didn't I learn it earlier?
@nixCraft I was 14 and I was trying to make a program to backup my Minecraft world saves 😅
Before that I had unsuccessfully attempted to learn #python, it never clicked to me. Everyone said that the syntax was easy but it wasn't easy for me.
What did click with me was Windows Shell Script, a.k.a Batch!
I felt very powerful when I started writing my little batch scripts. Soon after I discovered an obscure language called #AutoIt which I loved! I still use it to this day, professionally too.
So I'm learning #rust and found an example in "the book" confusing, so I opened an issue on GitHub to add a note which will hopefully prevent any further confusion!
I wonder if it's just me being too dumb or if I'm the first one actually who actually read the full text.
Decide for yourself: https://github.com/rust-lang/book/issues/3683
Imagine if the fate of the planet captivated the world as much as the fate of one deep sea submersible.
@Sheril What a boring dystopia we live in, consuming and waiting for the inevitable, instead of trying to fix it.
A century in the future we'll be seen as the boomers who were sitting on their asses while the world burned.
They'd be the ones responsible for putting out the fire and recovering from the damage.
@mozilla@mozilla.social Mission accomplished! My pull request with a patch to fix the issue has been officially merged into the main branch!

@mozilla@mozilla.social I'm still going to continue learning Rust since it is such a useful tool, I'm already considering to port one of my projects to Rust :)

A mildly interesting sequence of events yesterday lead to the Director of Engineering at @mozilla@mozilla.social telling me to learn #Rust so that I can fix a simple bug in Rust uutils (GNU coreutils replacement) 😃

I did not see any good reason to decline, so now I'm on my way to learn rust by reading "the book"!
Wish me luck 🤞
@marcan@treehouse.systems Ah, I didn't even know that we had a sub-reddit!
@ascendo @YurkshireLad @Codeberg I guess that's possible with ChatGPT, I don't really know how they work so I'm hitting my knowledge barrier here.
Bye bye folks and thanks for being such nice citizens. t-2.5
@ascott @YurkshireLad @ascendo @Codeberg Do they really dig into private repos? I read somewhere that they did not.
In any case, we have to think long and hard about how to handle novel situations like this, our current law is outdated for this.
@YurkshireLad @ascendo @Codeberg Well, it depends on where you draw the line for "use", the AI does not execute the code or redistribute it in a meaningful way (aside from generating output which looks like that code plus the other trillion lines of code it trained on).
The same argument can be used for general-purpose GPT training sets as well, they just train on all text scoured from the web regardless what who owns the text.
Today I'm trying to fix #ArchLinux's mkinitcpio tool, it uses a hardcoded PATH and pulls in stuff from /usr/local/bin even when I don't want it to!
