I don't know why anyone would want to listen to the news first thing in the morning?

Why start your day with so much negativity? Give yourself a few hours to wake up and adjust to the day.

THEN bombard your mind with the atrocities of life.

Thinking about a recent post of @Waitnwallflower reminded me of an idea a buddy and I had for a festival years ago.

Totally 80s.

Idea: get EVERY one-hit-wonder band from that decade and hire them to play their ONE song. They come on, play, and then get off.

Here's the cool part. The stage itself would be built in the shape of the Trivial Pursuit pie (6 empty wedges). A band would get a wedge to play from, they'd play their song, and then get rotated off the stage so the next group could play. This would cut down on interminable set changes, we figured. We also decided there were about 60 or so such bands from the 80s, so even if we could get half to agree that'd be pretty good.

The big finale would be that all the acts would come out on stage together and sing "We Are The World".

If it was successful, the following summer we'd get all of the 80s 2-hit-wonder bands and do it again. (Expect our phone call soon, Naked Eyes.)

I had it first.

Here we have two Baltimore orioles (Icterus galbula) arguing over a swing. Not really, there is half of an orange in the swing, so I think it's a dispute over the orange.

"Baltimore Orioles sometimes use their slender beaks to feed in an unusual way, called “gaping”: they stab the closed bill into soft fruits, then open their mouths to cut a juicy swath from which they drink with their brushy-tipped tongues." - allaboutbirds.org

#photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #BaltimoreOriole

There is a lot going on in this picture. A wood feeder shaped like a bench swing is hanging from a black cable attached to either side. In the background is a out of focus red rosed bush and behind that is a white fence.

There is a oriole perched on the edge of the swing with its back a right side facing the camera, it is looking up and right at another oriole who is perched on the arm of the bench. Its black beak is parted as if saying something to the other bird.

The other oriole is perched on the arm on the bench on the right side of the frame. It is facing to the left, toward the first oriole, with its left side facing the camera. Its black beak is open very wide as if yelling at the other bird.

Both orioles have black heads and bright yellowish orange bodies. Their wings and backs are black with white makings.

"Smaller and slenderer than an American Robin, Baltimore Orioles are medium-sized, sturdy-bodied songbirds with thick necks and long legs. Look for their long, thick-based, pointed bills, a hallmark of the blackbird family they belong to. Adult males are flame-orange and black, with a solid-black head and one white bar on their black wings. Females and immature males are yellow-orange on the breast, grayish on the head and back, with two bold white wing bars." - allaboutbirds.org

"If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve (or save) the world and a desire to enjoy (or savor) the world. This makes it hard to plan the day." ~ E.B.White

I coughed... the dog coughed... I coughed... dog coughed again. Turned out the whole family had colds and the dog was trying to fit in.

There are many people who can't afford to take days off work even when they are ill. The CDC should be recommending that employers give workers paid sick leave, not making it easier for bosses to exploit workers by saying it's fine to work when you are sick.

Okay, one more contribution for #SuperbOwlSunday. This is a Strix nebulosa, a #SuperbOwl I saw in Grand Teton National Park, a few years back. Great grey owls are one of the most amazing creatures. Their ability to hover, hear prey under lots of snow, and dive up to a foot into the snow to catch prey is amazing!

Hazy Heights

Yesterday, this turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) flew high overhead. I guess today is high big bird day. I took this with my canon 400mm lens stacked on a 1.4X Extender. There are a lot of both turkey vultures and black vultures around, so I take photos fairly regularly. I post one now and again but discard a bunch as well.

You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.

Take a look:

This vulture flies from left to right with its huge wings spread wide. The bird has a large brown-black body and small pink head with a small beige hooked beak. Its magnificent flight and tail feathers appear almost white when seen from below.

"Turkey Vultures are large dark birds with long, broad wings. Bigger than other raptors except eagles and condors, they have long "fingers" at their wingtips and long tails that extend past their toe tips in flight. When soaring, Turkey Vultures hold their wings slightly raised, making a ‘V’ when seen head-on. Turkey Vultures appear black from a distance but up close are dark brown with a featherless red head and pale bill. While most of their body and forewing are dark, the undersides of the flight feathers (along the trailing edge and wingtips) are paler, giving a two-toned appearance." - allaboutbirds.org

On 19 February 1942, by order of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, every person of Japanese ancestry on the West Coast was rounded up and shipped to one of ten "relocation centers" hundreds or thousands of miles from home, where they would be held for years under armed guard.

George Takei's childhood as one of the more than 120,000 mass incarcerated was memorialised in the graphic novel "They Called Us Enemy".
