Oriole in Amber

This Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) visited a few springs ago, part of a small group that lingered for a week or two. I set out orange halves to welcome them, and they took to the offering with enthusiasm. They were also drawn to the suet feeder, adding bright flashes of color and song to the yard during their brief stay.

Step into a world where even the smallest moments—like the glint in a bird's eye—tell their own story.

"Perched with quiet poise on a slender tree branch, the Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) radiates brilliance against a lush green backdrop. Its body is ablaze with a rich, fiery orange—like a flame flickering in the forest canopy. The wings are jet black, edged with crisp white streaks that resemble brushstrokes of light. Its head, also black, gives the bird a regal, masked appearance, as if dressed for a ceremonial rite. The branch curves gently beneath its feet, textured with bark and framed by soft, out-of-focus foliage that whispers of summer. The oriole’s posture is alert yet serene, a sentinel of song and color in the quiet green. The image captures not just a bird, but a moment of vivid stillness—where nature’s palette and presence converge in a single, sovereign perch. In the bottom left corner, the image bears the signature “© Swede’s Photographs,” marking the scene as both witness and offering." - Microsoft Copilot

Flame Among the Leaves

This Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) has a slender strand of fiber clinging to the tip of his beak, along with faint specks of debris scattered across his black head. The fiber might be from the orange I set out for them—a small trace of his recent visit.

"A Baltimore Oriole perches gracefully on a slender branch, surrounded by a lush canopy of green leaves. Its plumage blazes with color—an intense, fiery orange that covers its chest and belly, glowing like a sunset against the soft green backdrop. The bird’s head and wings are a deep, velvety black, creating a bold contrast that makes its silhouette pop. A pale blue, dagger-like beak points forward with quiet alertness, while its round, dark eyes seem to scan the scene with calm intelligence. The background is softly blurred, allowing the oriole and the nearby foliage to stand out in crisp detail. The composition feels intimate and serene, capturing a fleeting moment of wild beauty. In the bottom right corner, the image is signed “© Swede’s Photographs,” a subtle nod to the artist’s presence behind the lens." - Copilot

Bright Visitor in the Canopy

This bird dropped in briefly this morning while Charlie and I were outside, sipping coffee and watching the feeder drama unfold. I believe it’s a juvenile Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula), though it could also be an Orchard Oriole (Icterus spurius). Honestly, I’m hoping for the latter—I don’t have a photo of one yet. But Merlin lists Baltimore as its first choice and Orchard as a close second. Copilot agrees: the evidence leans toward Baltimore.

"A small bird perches lightly on a sturdy branch amidst a tangle of green foliage. Its body glows with warm, golden-yellow tones, particularly on the chest and belly, like sunlight caught in feathers. The wings are charcoal-gray, tipped with pale, almond-colored bars—soft brushstrokes of contrast against the brightness of its body. Its slender, pointed beak juts forward with subtle alertness, as if poised between stillness and the promise of sudden flight.

The bird’s posture is balanced yet lively; head slightly angled, it appears to be studying its surroundings with youthful curiosity. Behind it, the background fades into a smooth blur of forest green and hints of sky, drawing all attention to the bird’s vivid form. Dappled sunlight dances across its back, giving texture to the soft plumage. There's a quiet energy in the image—a fleeting moment suspended between wild freedom and gentle calm." - Copilot

The Orange Glance

When the Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula) were passing through a few years ago, several would drop by this little swing feeder. A friend on Mastodon suggested I try offering half an orange—and sure enough, it worked. I placed a sliced orange on the feeder and ended up with some pretty cool shots. This was the first one I captured.

"Perched on a miniature porch swing designed for feathered guests, a Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula) presents a moment of both elegance and playfulness. The feeder, crafted from pale wood with slatted sides and armrests, dangles by black wires like a gentle cradle suspended in the air. Nestled within this whimsical seat, the oriole faces right, its sleek body vibrant with deep orange plumage that glows like late afternoon sun. Contrasting black feathers wrap its head and wings, setting off the saturated warmth of its breast like ink on flame.

The bird’s head is turned back over its right shoulder, beak slightly parted, catching the viewer in a curious, alert glance. Bits of orange cling to the tip of its beak, evidence of its recent nibble at the citrus slices nestled just above the lip of the feeder. This flash of fruit, bright and glistening, mirrors the bird’s own fiery color, creating a kind of echo between nourishment and nature. The background blurs into soft greens and a kiss of red bloom, letting the oriole and its charming swing steal the scene." - Copilot

"This image depicts a lively interaction between two Baltimore Orioles (Icterus galbula) at a uniquely designed swing-shaped bird feeder. The feeder features a light-colored wooden construction, with slats forming the seat and backrest, and is suspended by two sturdy black cords. In the center of the seat lies an orange slice, which seems to be the focal point of their spirited quarrel.

One Baltimore Oriole perches assertively on the backrest, its vibrant orange-and-black plumage gleaming in the light as it appears to vocalize, perhaps staking its claim to the orange slice. The second oriole, situated on the seat, tilts its head upward, engaging with the other bird. Its similarly striking orange and black feathers create a vivid contrast against the natural wooden tones of the feeder. The scene is surrounded by hints of greenery and soft pink blossoms in the background, adding a serene yet vibrant touch to this dynamic moment.

This image captures the charismatic nature of these colorful birds and their lively behavior over shared food in a beautifully natural setting." - Copilot

We visited the Meadowlark Botanical Gardens in Northern Virginia this afternoon. As usual, we saw many beautiful flowers as well as a variety of birds. The highlights of this visit were seeing an Osprey catch a fish as well as spotting Baltimore Orioles.

Prompt 16: Backyard
-> Baltimore Oriole

The 4th and final week of #feathruary has started! And the first prompt I tackled was "backyard".

Granted, I will never see one of these beauties in my backyard, but since I have already drawn every German backyard birb at least once, I looked on and eventually landed (ha!) on this one.

Baltimore orioles are quite common in North America, where they live in the Nearctic during summer and migrate to winter in the Neotropics.

Because of their beautiful colour and song, people grew very fond of them and arranged special oriole feeders in their backyards; orioles discovered those and lead their young ones there, resulting in them becoming popular backyard birbs.

They mainly feed on fruit and nectar, but unlike other fruit-eating birbs, they prefer very ripe fruit, picking only the darkest and juciest berries for example. They also like to mlem on halved oranges and have been observed to be fond of grape jelly. So, if you live near them and want to attract them, you know what to do. :D

FUN FACT
The Baltimore oriole gets its name from 17th century Lord Baltimore. Their colours match those of Lord Baltimore's coat-of-arms, hence the name. Today, it is the state birb of Maryland and namesake and mascot for the Baltimore Orioles, a baseball team.
