Announcing Key Transparency for the Fediverse

I'm pleased to announce the immediate availability of a reference implementation for the Public Key Directory server. This software implements the Key Transparency specification I've been working on since last year, and is an important stepping stone towards secure end-to-end encryption for the Fediverse. If someone says you need to verify your Mastodon account, it's a scam.

If someone says you need to change the email address on your account, it's a scam.

If someone tries to lure you off-platform to Discord or Telegram, it's a scam.

If someone jumps into your replies or DMs with a mutual aid request, it's a scam.

If someone from mastodon.social sends you an unsolicited DM, it's a scam.

- wants you to click something
- unsolicited private interactions
- new account
- under ~20 followers and over ~5:1 follow ratio
- sense of urgency
- appeals to your compassion

I believe it’s crucial that we build better on-boarding and marketing resources for the fediverse, and I look forward to improving these next year after I catch up with @PixelFed , @loops and @supapp

It really has been a bittersweet year, and I have worked hard on myself to become a better developer, leader and person.

Words only mean so much, it’s action that matters. While some doubted me and my intentions, I became more focused on building than ever.

Loops belongs to the people, and is now fully open source.

I appreciate all the people that stuck with me and never lost hope or respect.

Please take a moment to ensure that your instance of Mastodon, Misskey, PeerTube, PixelFed, or any other Fediverse platform is fully up-to-date.

It may also be wise to log into your server and update your operating system.

Debian / Ubuntu servers:

sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
sudo reboot

Fedora / CentOS / Red Hat / Alma Linux:

sudo dnf update --refresh
sudo dnf upgrade
sudo reboot

If you update your OS, your server will be briefly offline during the reboot. If you have not configured your web services — including your Fediverse service — to start automatically on boot, you may need to start them manually afterward.

Always make a backup before performing upgrades.

If any of this is confusing or feels overwhelming, you should reconsider whether you want to be a server administrator. This is not meant as an insult. It’s great that you wanted to contribute to the Fediverse, but you may be better off participating as a user rather than an admin. People depend on you to keep services running smoothly, and that requires knowing how to maintain your system safely and correctly.

@masek I am an American with 8 kids. When each kids graduates from high school, I take them outside the country on a trip. I've always had to explain to them why a lot of people hate/despise/look down on Americans. It's been that way my whole life.

People keep going on about the OpenAI / Disney thing but it's not going to actually happen. There are rules in place to prevent those things. If you are curious, you can search specifically for Disney Rule 34 and skip the irrelevant rules.
