Respect for Volker Wissing for leaving C. Lindner and the FDP behind 😃
I wish he would have done a little more towards human centric traffic management, but hey there is still a month ...
Fascism is inevitable if the wider people feel poorer and less secure than they want to be. People like that seek to blame others, and that leads to fascism.
To defeat fascism, you tax the rich and spend it on the poor. You eliminate billionaires.
That's the only mechanism that will reliably work over periods of time.
EU; change tactics. Stop walking the USA/UK path. Raise taxes on the rich, spend on your public services. Watch the fascists power vanish.
I know that today people's mind will be focused on the US elections, but I just got news that my very first PhD student has just signed a contract for a permanent position in academia, and I couldn't be happier for her 🥰

T - 5 years until 1984 (if we are lucky) 😕
I've almost de-googled, but as I've been moving away from the US tech giants, my employer has been moving closer to them (as has much of the Danish state).
It's actually ridiculous there isn't a European alternative.

I hate how all AI hype is predicated on "if we can just make this not be broken then it would be an amazing product"
And because AI produced things look kinda close to the real deal people buy it. Cause it feels like it just needs a small improvement, even though its flaws are a fundamental part of the technology
Just don't draw the weird 6th finger. Just don't make up things when you don't have a real answer. Just don't change the environment in an AI generated game entirely if the player turns around 180 degrees
These things *feel* like they're small, solvable problems to people who don't know better. We could easily fix those things if humans were doing the work!
But AI can't. It will never be able to. It can't because not doing those things means it couldn't do anything else either. Like self-driving cars, the solution to these issues will always be 2 years out
Rund 100 Tote in Spanien.

This is a “how to” guide. #GPUSPH, as the name suggests, was designed from the ground up to run on #GPU (w/ #CUDA, for historical reasons). We wrote a CPU version a long time ago for a publication that required a comparison, but it was never maintained. In 2021, I finally took the plunge, and taking inspiration from #SYCL, adapted the device code in functor form, so that it could be “trivially” compiled for CPU as well.
Also, in case anyone is counting, Starlink is now 63% of all active satellites.
2 out of ever 3 satellites up there now are owned by that awful billionaire. He effectively controls Low Earth Orbit. That should terrify everyone.
MDPI’s International Journal of Molecular Sciences has been delisted from Directory of Open Access Journals, for failure to adhere to best practices. I interpret that to mean publishing literally hundreds of special issues per yr, with lax editorial scrutiny; in some cases guest editors using it as repository for their own work
Last year at least half of Iceland's workforce worked 32 hours per week with no reduction in pay. Iceland's economy expanded by 5%, a growth rate second only to that of Malta among rich European economies.

As maintainer of OSS Python scientific libraries, I'm seeing more users sharing screenshots of their error messages instead of copying and pasting them as text. I'm not sure why that's happening. But here's an advice:
Please, share plain text!
Because:
* Text is lightweight to send and store. #FrugalComputing
* Text is accessible: not all of us can see images.
* Text is easily parseable: I can search through it, copy it, paste it, quote it, reuse it.

Good news of #today H. Kickl will not be Austrias 🇦🇹 next chancellor 😊. The bad news, chances are good for a "neoliberal" coalition comprising of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS. The NEOS ideology is somewhat similar to the FDP from Germany and oh boy there is a reason why they will be below 5% at the next election 🙄.
