I was laid-off and am looking for a new role.

Working where design meets code is my jam. I am skilled at building accessible design system components, working with Web Components APIs, and creating scalable CSS architecture.

I work remotely from my home in Manitoba, Canada. 🇨🇦

To save myself from endless doom scrolling I've been working on a bunch of updates to my web starter, Grease: grease.aaadaaam.com/

Lots of new modern CSS additions like anchored menus with a tiny fallback, progressively enhanced custom select styling, etc. Also a much improved kitchen sink with a robust light/dark + theme picker so you can quickly see the impact of changes you make.

@ashur the specific colors + halftone pattern are evoking a strong memory of babysitting a copy machine in junior high, feeding in various colors of stock. Dig it.

Need a beyond senior design-engineer + design-director + lead front + back-end developer that can jump into any part of your product?

Will soon be open for FT, PT, or freelance.

(would really appreciate boosting for reach)

@zachleat the latter. Basically lets GitHub design and build more job-specific tools and interfaces. Labels are just too unreliable for that kind of stuff.

@zachleat key line: "shared and consistent language across all repositories in an organization"

Means they can reliably build much more tailored reporting features that cut across repositories.

It feels weird to talk about work stuff when there’s so much going on in the world, but I’m pretty dang proud of what our team built for Oregon Symphony

Before I was fired tonight, I was in charge of information security for VA.gov, which has millions of users per month and stores and processes huge amounts of veterans' personal information. I've been told by people I've worked with that I'm the best at what I do of anyone they've ever worked with. Now there will be _no one_ in charge of information security for VA.gov.
Does this seem like improving government efficiency?

On the stakes and potential consequences of Musk’s & Trump’s seizure of some key operations of the federal government: 1. people will be more likely to obey if centrally watched, 2. shutting off opponents from key resources & divert to loyalists, etc. kottke.org/25/02/why-it-matter

In light of US tech oligarchy setting its sights on Wikimedia Foundation, a historical detail I did not know before: #Wikipedia became the non-profit it is today partly as the result of a labour strike of Spanish Wikipedia editors who disagreed with the proposed inclusion of advertisements. Initially, it was not clear what revenue model Wikipedia would get, and Wales moved towards a for-profit model already a year after launch. However, rather than working for free, so Jimmy Wales could profit from their labour via advertising, Spanish contributors forked Spanish Wikipedia as the Encyclopedia Libre Universal. Under the threat of losing the editorial community of such a large language, Wales conceded and set up the non-profit.

That is to say, however imperfect they are, all the digital commons we have are the result of ongoing struggle and hard work to keep them as commons.

My favorite artifacts from David Lynch's incredible career:

1. The Lost Highway soundtrack. Come for Lou Reed's rendition of "This Magic Moment", stay for Angelo Badalamenti's dark, moody jazz.

2. Dune. I know the man himself had feelings about this movie and doesn't consider it his best work, but it's the weird gothic space opera that captured my weird gothic teenage heart.
