Remember, the main reason so many firms push you to use their apps when you can do the same stuff via their websites is that apps typically give them far more insight into your activities on your phone, even often unrelated to that app. So when you can use the websites, it's often best to say NO to the apps.

Pride Screen of Death.

#Windows #BSOD

Photo of a computer monitor displaying a Windows Blue Screen of Death; something has gone wrong with either the OC or the display, though, as the screen is divided into vertical stripes of repeating red, blue, and green, with thin regions of black between them. The frowning face emoticon of the BSOD is visible. The same bug causing the vertical color stripes has also garbled the message text, but unscrambled it would say, โ€œYour PC ran j to a problem and needs to restart.โ€ A distorted QR code is also visible.

Do you actually sit next to strangers on the train and tell them that you think their shoes are ugly, that you would rather read a different book, and that theyโ€™re definitely living their lives wrong?

No? Then donโ€™t do that shit on the internet either.

Software development methodologies compared.

#software #development #agile #waterfall #ai #developer

Three different software dev philosophies.

Waterfall: wheel first, wheels and body next, full car at end.

Agile: skateboard first, motorcycle next, almost finished car last.

AI: car with only back window and front tire first, cat motorcycle next, duck last.

@smithkm Thanks for letting me know, and kudos to #CapitalBike for looking after cyclists' interests.

I still don't understand why the Ministry of Transportation considers that intersection "unique", though. It looks pretty ordinary to me.

There is a sentiment that Iโ€™ve never understood: that we canโ€™t, as a society, have nice things because they would be โ€œexpensiveโ€. We canโ€™t have bike lanes or trains or beautiful buildings or healthy people or happy families or street trees or trams or any fucking thing because it would cost too much. And I just donโ€™t get it. What is the point of us all doing work if itโ€™s not to produce a nicer society?

Airlines are like "instead of all those agents, we'll make a sort of assembly line manned by customers. Check in with one machine, drop your baggage off with another."

Then literally anything happens with the computer network requiring an elevated number of customers to need manual intervention, and suddenly you have an enormous immobile line while every single customer lines up before the two (2) remaining agents.

Corporations don't care about "efficiency" they just wanna fire people

@smithkm
There are several instances in our bike paths on which our transit authorities best solution is to have cyclists dismount.

This is obviously coming from people who don't give a crap about micro-mobility and just want to prioritize cars above everything else.

People are so hyperfocused on plastic hats like they are the only thing that matters in the safety of cycling. You see people on bikes sharing the road with multi-ton vehicles every day, and I don't hear regular folk come out and say โ€œhey it's not okayโ€.

But what I hear them say is wear helmets

Then sports cyclists who brag about distance/speed/elevation/trail difficulty say wear helmets

Even bike messengers who do absolute bonkers stuff on public roads dare to come and say wear helmets

I'm staying on the outskirts of Hamburg, in an area that is like Langley to Metro Vancouver.
I booked a room in a random hotel near where my friend lives.
I walked 8 mins from his place to my hotel, 5 mins to a supermarket, 3 mins to a fantastic vegan restaurant. I never felt unsage.
Would I be able to do this in Langley? Doubt it. I don't think it's even possible in East Van where I live.

Exclusionary zoning robs us of quality of life.

#LeDevoir and #GlobeAndMail need to stop intentionally making subscriptions hard to cancel.
You can do everything with the subscription online, change address/payment, upgrade etc. But if you want to cancel? MUST CALL inside office hours.

NYT doesn't do this. WaPo doesn't do this. It undermines the integrity of your journalists doing reporting on seedy business practices.
Stop it.

I made a new Mastodon bot, called "I Hope This Email Finds You.โ€ Twice a day it proposes a novel way to conclude that sentence that opens so many emails. (It uses phrases from Google Books that include the phrase โ€œfinds you.โ€) I've been having fun reading these, so I turned it into a bot because you, too, might have fun reading them. botsin.space/@thisemailfindsyo
