The reason this zine is called "The Secret Rules of the Terminal" is that I learned more useful things while writing this zine than when writing any other zine, even though I've been using the terminal every day for 20 years.

It really left me feeling like the terminal is full of hidden secrets -- because "the terminal" is made up of so many different pieces, there's no single terminal manual you can read!

Here's the table of contents (which as a bonus shows the components of the terminal!)

@phocks Yeah, those 12" look interesting, esp a 32GB, 2TB machine in cost comparison to the same specs on a MBA M4, but imagine the performance is more like that of an M1 or M2 with the i5 Intel chip (plus, need a fan. Boo.)?

The screen on the 12" is 16:9 or 16:10 ratio though, now?

I *hated* the square screen on the Framework 13" I had. Was eventually what made me give it up as it made split vertical screens a pain.

Little NASA comparison from the first stage of the Artemis test.

- Only one test
- Successful launch and orbit
- Established a lunar transfer trajectory (went to THE MOON)
- Deployed a full sized human-rated capsule
- It did a flyby of the moon
- It re-injected itself in a return trajectory
- The capsule returned to Earth
- Re-entered the atmosphere, landed safely.

A flawless, multi stage, full test in a perfectly executed mission by NASA.

But, government is inefficient, etc.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I’ve been made redundant at my job. If you want to hire an excellent Apple platforms developer (iOS, etc.) with 17 years of experience, time at Apple, and lots of SwiftUI experience, or a great Ruby on Rails developer, reach out.

Full-time or freelance. Ready to go immediately. Please spread the word. #Swift #RubyOnRails #GetFediHired

New exoplanet classification just dropped.

xkcd.com/3103/

#astrodon #astronomy #astrophysics #space #science

An xkcd cartoon titled “Typical exoplanet system”. There’s a drawing of a star and several weird planets orbiting around it. The planets are labeled as follows:

Giant planet orbiting so close that it’s actually rolling on the star’s surface.

Hot Jupiter.

Mini Neptune.

Planet that could be habitable, if there’s a form of life that hates water but loves acid and being on fire.

Cold Jupiter.

Potentially habitable void.

Hot Mars.

Planet that may actually be in the habitable zone, according to a very optimistic modelling paper by some desperate postdocs.

There’s a pulsar here but it’s probably fine.

A water world paradise with beautiful oceans and warm- wait, no, we just got new measurements, it’s a hellish steam oven.

Mini Pluto.

Lukewarm Jupiter.

Earthlike data artifact.

Planet whose atmosphere is confirmed to contain atoms.

Wet Saturn.

Either a gas giant or a fist-sized rock, depending which calibration method you use.

Faint dust cloud that will cause several papers to be retracted.

Somehow this whole system is smaller than the orbit of Mercury?!

Planet whose surface may host conditions suitable for rocks.

Mouseover text: Sure, this exoplanet we discovered may seem hostile to life, but our calculations suggest it’s actually in the accretion disc’s habitable zone.

Detox Doodles!

This is a habit of drawing something every time I feel the urge to scroll unnecessarily. It helps stop the bad habit and start a new good habit of sketching daily!

This page is all about cute little sugar gliders!

Sketchbook page of drawings of sugar gliders in teal ink. There are 7 drawings and the top of the page is labeled "Sugar Gliders" with the date 5/20/25. The top is one with its tongue sticking out, one gliding ("woosh" and "whee"), and a baby one. Below that is one on a branch, one holding some fingers, a small face, and a sleeping one.

Thanks to the Fediverse, I will never forget that sharks are older than the north star (which is to say the brightest star that makes up Polaris), and horseshoe crabs are not crabs and are older than horseshoes, horses, and crabs. And sharks.

Hey Fedis,

A long running NGO pro bono project I've been on for... <looks at watch> 13 years was just successfully sunset, so...

If you're aware of any worthy ngos or charities in need of tech, campaigning, board/trustee, or strategy help, please let them know I'm looking to vollie.

I'm particularly interested in helping out wildlife and conservation causes, but as ex-Amnesty and GetUp, up for anything where the cause is just and quarrel honourable.

"The rugged individual who relies on no one else is a figure who can only exist in a culture of domination where a privileged few use more of the world’s resources than the many who must daily do without.

Worship of individualism has in part led us to the unhealthy culture of narcissism that is so all pervasive in our society."

Fx (fx.wtf) is a nice alternative to `jq`. Same ability to quickly dig and extract values out of nested JSON but comes with a nice UI traversing the data structure, showing the syntax, copying, and immediately using. In other words, you don't have to remember all of the syntax, let the UI show you.

Doesn't hurt that the commands are Vim-like too.

Do wish it had an XDG configuration, though (uses environment variables instead).

Definitely a productivity boost!
