Like many geologists, I am convinced that extraterrestrial life exists.

But as little as we communicate with other species from our home planet, or even between members of our own species, I'm also convinced that mutual beneficial communication with "them" is impossible.
In spite of that, I still hope "they" will prove me wrong.

(08 Oct) James Webb telescope finds ’remarkable’ evidence that a black hole plowed through a galaxy, leaving an enormous scar behind

Using JWST and ALMA data, astronomers have spotted a superlong and narrow ’galactic contrail,’ possibly produced by a black hole. The gas- and dust-rich tail is 20,000 light-years long but just 650 light-years wide.

For day 9 #spacetober_challenge nebula: Caroline Herschel (1750 – 1848) a trail blazing woman in #astronomy. Hers was a real life Cinderella story, where rather than marrying a prince, she made a life & career for herself. Marriage her expected role but she was deemed unmarriageable, since a childhood bout of typhus stunted her growth. Her mother thought she should train to be a servant, & purposely stood in the way of her 🧵

THE THOLIAN WEB: Readers of a certain age will remember The Tholian Web. It appeared in a 1968 episode of Star Trek (The Original Series). Captain Kirk was caught between dimensions while Spock and crew rushed to rescue him. At the same time, the Tholians weaved a destructive energy web around the Enterprise.

Fast forward to 2025, and the Tholian Web is real. The checkerboard streaks in this image were photographed by Lorenzo Comolli of Saint Barthelemy, Italy. He was trying to take a picture of Comet Lemmon in September, but as the exposure time increased, more and more Starlink satellites crossed the field of view.

"It seems that the promise of Musk of dark satellites is completely void. They are really bright (2nd and 3rd magnitude)," says Comolli. "This makes me worry for the future quality of the sky."

Image showing the night sky filled with stars and a comet to the lower left. Crisscrossing the view are many white lines caused by StarLink satellites. In the upper right of the image is a picture of the star ship Enterprise (NCC-1701) being trapped in similar crisscrossed lines from the episode The Tholian Web.

Received in the mail yesterday a Optolong Moon SkyGlow 2" Mounted Filter for the s50. Also purchased a dew shield (with additional accessories) on Etsy. Here is a comparison test between the actual filter and the s50 onboard light pollution filter. Test subject - .

NGC 6888 The Crescent Nebula - telescope processed image. Definitely less red than the earlier images, but missing some detail. Looks like longer exposures time is needed. 20+ image using 20 second exposures. NGC 6888 The Crescent Nebula - unprocessed image. Less red in this new image. This is a 20+ minute exposure with 20 second exposures. NGC 6888 The Crescent Nebula - telescope processed image. The onboard denoising seems to amplify the red color more. 20+ duration image using 10 second exposures. NGC 6888 The Crescent Nebula - unprocessed image. Using just the s50 onboard LP filter, more reddish tones. Took this 20+ minute image in 10 second exposures.
