@mcc I thought it was normal? Like the brain drops details when it's not necessary right?

@th @mcc as a rule of thumb, "simple" (or "lightweight") is to protocol names as "democratic" (or "peoples") is to country names.

“The signal is repeating! We’ve got the whole thing.”

“How many bits?”

“Almost 500k. 454,957 bits”

“I got a hunch, factorize that number”

“Bingo, seven fifty seven times six oh one. Think it could be a rectangular bitmap?”.

“It’s what we used to do back before those assholes let Arecibo fall down. Try bm2png.pl in my bin dir.”

“That worked. Holy shit I know that image. It’s the Pioneer plaque. That diagram from Pioneer 11 of human figures, and a map to Earth.”

“What, thats impossible, it’s only been, what, 70 odd years. That probe would still be in our own Kuiper Belt.”

“Outside it, actually, it’d be about one sixty AU out. They lost contact in the mid 90s. Still basically in our backyard but.”

“It’s too soon! If someone’s found it now, that would mean. Shit. They’re. Already. Here. Inside the Solar system.”

“And all they’ve got to say, is ‘Hi, we liked ur meme’.?”

“Maybe not, can you bring up an image of the original plaque? Are the images identical?”

“I’ll do a layer subtraction. Hey, there /is/ a difference. In the map of the planets. They’ve omitted Pluto from their copy.”

“Fucking hell. Little green reply guys.”

Richtig coole Seite wenn man mal sehen will, wie eine Automatik-Uhr funktioniert. Bitte nicht nur die erste Animation ansehen. Beim Scrollen findet man jede Funktion nochmal einzeln animiert

Haha. From xkcd.com/835/ obligatory comic for holiday season

The comic humorously talks about a Christmas tree that's also a binary search tree.

There is a binary Christmas tree, with each node a ball, and lights strung between parent and child nodes. Beneath it is a heap of presents - sorted with the largest on top, smaller presents connected to it with string. Next to the tree is Cueball and his parents, Hairbun and another Cueball.

Cueball: It's a Christmas tree with a heap of presents underneath!

Mother: ...We're not inviting you home next year.

Climate denier logic

Picture of Titanic sinking, stern section raised in the air and captioned “If we're sinking why are we hundreds of feet up in the air?”
Bashar boosted:
Dog from "this is fine" meme extinguishes the fire. Captions says: It's not fine, and you have a responsibility to act.

This Is Fine is a two-pane image of an anthropomorphic dog trying to assure himself that everything is fine, despite sitting in a room that is engulfed in flames. Taken from an issue of the webcomic series Gunshow illustrated by K.C. Green and published in early January 2013, the cartoon is typically used as a reaction image to convey a sense of self-denial or acceptance in the face of a hopeless situation.

Results from this poll: With ~620 respondents,

66% are opposed or alarmed to "Threads" [Instagram] joining Mastodon/Fediverse.

85% are supportive or indifferent to Tumblr doing the same.

Here's why I made this poll:

It seems odd at first the Fediverse is all about connecting platforms but its users are so vehemently opposed to "Threads".

What this poll implies is Mastoverse users are *not* opposed to corporate presence in the Fediverse. This is a trust issue with Facebook *specifically*.

"How do you feel about 'Meta'/'Threads'/Instagram/Facebook federating with Mastodon?

36% Opposed
30% Alarmed
10% Supportive
24% Indifferent"How do you feel about Tumblr federating with Mastodon?

Here's how the "Ship of Theseus" page looked in July 2003 when it was first created! Since then, the article has been edited 1792 times. 0% of its original phrases remain.

A Wikipedia page for Ship of Theseus is shown. The article reads "According to an ancient Greek legend, Theseus had a warship that was preserved as a historical relic by the Athenians. Some of its boards rotted and had to be replaced. After many, many years, many such replacements occurred. Eventually, none of the original boards were present. Philosophers could then debate whether it was the same ship that Theseus had used, and if not, when it had ceased to be so.
A modern embellishment
If Theseus paid a nontransferable fee, allowed to be used for only one ship, for the privilege of docking in a particular harbor, would he violate the non-transferability of his license if repeated replacement of boards eventually had the result described above?"

Learning better with Dale’s Law: A Spectral Perspective - #NeurIPS2023 contribution by Li et al. (2023). It discusses how to train brainlike #RNNs with separate inhibitory and excitatory units with similar performance as standard RNNs:

@FantasticalEconomics @futurebird

Deep in the walls, Economics keeps a shrine to Physics. She loves her. She hates her. Physics moves with a kind of aloof austerity, and while she's not as fetted as she once was, people move aside when she comes into the room.

Economics' shrine to her has posters of these galas in her secret room. The tables in front of them are festooned with flowers. The posters themselves are riddled with stab marks.
