#BestOf2025, from Kit @oconnell: “The modern enforcement of marijuana prohibition that exists today, that system began in #Texas in 1915 in El Paso. It was the very first city in the entire country that prohibited marijuana.” https://www.texasobserver.org/dan-patrick-texas-devastating-thc-ban/

Dismantling Defenses: Trump 2.0 Cyber Year In Review
The Trump administration has pursued a staggering range of policy pivots this past year that threaten to weaken the nation’s ability and willingness to address a broad spectrum of technology challenges, from cybersecurity and privacy to countering disinformation, fraud and corruption. These shifts, along with the president’s efforts to restrict free speech and freedom of the press, have come at such a rapid clip that many readers probably aren’t even aware of them all.

Altman and Jony Ive have a warped idea of democratization. @emilymbender and I take on the ridiculous marketing video which came out of OpenAI several months ago in Ep. 58 of our podcast.

What do we actually know about girls and math?
Have your beliefs about gender and math performance been warped by outdated and sloppy research?
What does looking at more than 7 million students and across many countries tell us about our misconceptions?

The International Telecommunication Union has released its 2025 Facts and Figures report, which reflects that nearly 6 billion people—about three-quarters of the world’s population—are now using the Internet.
These numbers remind us of how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. But until everyone has access to the Internet, our work will continue.

End of Zaz era at WB? Netflix pays 83.7B for Warner Bros film and TV studios, HBO | Max. Is Zaz back as head of Discovery Global, which means he just borrowed enough money to drive WB for a few years and then sell it to Netflix like some vintage Porsche convertible? One thing is for sure: Westworld is going back up on Netflix....

Today is World AIDS Day, a day that reminds me of the decades-long fight for dignity, science, and compassion. We’ve come so far because activists, researchers, and communities refused to be ignored.
It’s important to acknowledge that Donald Trump is slashing funding for HIV prevention and global health programs, undermining public health agencies, and treating vulnerable communities as political collateral. That is not leadership. It’s cruelty dressed up as policy.
Let’s be louder than his hate today. Let’s honor those we lost by defending science, protecting care, and standing with the LGBTQ+ community and everyone affected by HIV/AIDS.
We owe it to history, and to each other, to never go backward.
It's incredible that the EU can't agree to seize all Russian assets for the war in Ukraine. The situation is dire for both Ukraine and Europe but still formal/legal arguments prevail it seems, while we are at war already in many ways.

I meet web developers who cannot accept that most smartphones in the world, and even in the US, are not iPhones. And that keeps them from understanding that the "i" in "iPhone" stands for "inequality":

Here's the official Global Meteor Network camera video of the reentry of Starlink 1066 on Monday night/Tuesday morning from Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan! This video is courtesy University of Western Ontario and Defence R&D Canada.
I counted 13 pieces in the video, how many do we think made it to the ground and are sitting on canola stubble east of Saskatoon?
Folks, it's happened. AI has become *so* smart that it knows how to intentionally sabotage a live product demos by Mark Zuckerberg and leave him helplessly flailing...

@stevesong I finally got around to a better expression of the CDN concentration, LMK what you think
Loving the perf on this frameworks (@frameworkcomputer) desktop. Another! I think 2 of these will give me about the same performance as one ryzen threadripper 7975wx, but using half the power and a quarter of the space
