Lots of Mastodon instances are struggling with the heavy influx of users. Twitter was the same in the early days. The Fail Whale, was something you’d see on a regular basis. Gives it a chance, things will get better.

This one hasn't gotten the Daylight Saving memo and currently thinks it's an hour before dinnertime and therefor time for him to sit next to me and my computer. #cats #CatsOfMastodon

Tip for the new folk:
Often Mastodon’s features work the way they do because it was first populated by people who had been harassed on FB and the Birdsite.

For instance (not sorry), you cannot search Masto for a simple term. Only #hashtags. Say you’re having a private conversation about iguanas. Anti-iguana trolls will not be able to search for “iguanas”, find your conversation, and drop into it to say, “Iguana luvers suck!”

But if you are wanting to connect with new iguana fanciers on Mastodon, slipping an #iguanas hashtag somewhere into your posts will allow people to search for and find them.

@deepthinking @briannawu then there was an additional 11k after the signups we're turned off from folks sending out invite codes.. that is really what caused the current slowdown. Stux posted a note with the game plan to migrate to a new larger class server since this one can't be upgraded further

To help make connections: 
name things that interest you but aren't in your profile, as tags so they are searchable. Then boost/repeat its instructions so others know to do the same. I love all genres of movies/series.

So things are lagged enough over here that I am not sure anyone will actually see this in a timely manner... but after reading a note from Stux I think I am going to stick it out. He seems to have a plan and I like this instance.

@jessica I've been out of the office for almost 3 years at this point... but in the beforetimes several of the managers had Alexa devices all on the same account.

My joy was walking by one of the cubes and casually saying "Alexa play death metal" and then having it pipe out into all the cubes sharing that account.

@gearyster @elijah723 last I used it the in-viewfinder lightmeter was completely borked though on the Yashica which was a bit of a bummer.
