In the past few years, I have worked on multiple coming-of-age films set in the late 90s. I thought it was a wave of nostalgia, but today a director told me: it is not nostalgia; that is the last time in history when you can set a human plot about teenagers without half of it dealing with cellphones or social media.

Seeing it that way, it is rather sad.

Trusted to Write for the Greatest Stars of the Silent Screen: The Screenwriting Career of Ruth Cummings – Dr. Rosanne Welch, Script Magazine, January 2026

Though born in 1894 in Washington, D.C., the family business was theatre, not the politics of President Grover Cleveland’s administration.  With an actor for a father - Henry Dupree Sinclair – the future Ruth Sinclair would also begin her career on the stage before turning to film, where she wrote for silent stars such as Lillian Gish, Greta Garbo, and Joan Crawford.

Ok, not so much on the high seas as in a New York apartment, but there are hijinks! Follow the antics of the ghost of a bumbling pirate captain as he annoys a New York couple after they buy the cursed anchor from his sunken ship.

Are we curing cancer?

Is entertainment a frivolous pursuit, or does it make a difference in people's lives beyond making them smile? Happiness is important! Even so, our work goes a lot deeper.

This isn't a career.

Showbusiness careers don't progress based on the growth of our experience, per se. Instead, they reflect our impact on the people around us.

One of the greatest (anglo American) TV sitcom pilots of all time is the first episode of Cheers.

It still stands up.

It is noteworthy for effectively introducing an entire ensemble cast by giving each character their own "moment", and also for motivated character entrances and exits.

If you write for TV, film, theatre, or other forms of performance, it's worth studying the script.

One of the all-time great introductions of a character in TV is for President Jeb Bartlett in the pilot episode of The West Wing.

It's a great example what George Bernard Shaw called a "star entrance". (Did I get that right? It's been a while and I'm going by memory.)

That pilot script is an advanced class in TV writing / writing for performance / storytelling. 1/n

One of the all-time great introductions of a character in film is for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

It's handled just as elegantly in the screenplay as in the film.

If you're a filmmaker, screenwriter, or a fiction writer in any medium, both the film and the script is worth studying.

Ambiguity isn’t depth, and weirdness isn’t a substitute for writing. On Kinds of Kindness, Bugonia, and the cult of prestige nonsense. Being bizarre on purpose is not the same thing as having something to say.

Be necessary.

What makes people show up for you? Is getting people interested in what you have to offer going to be enough?

How do we get people to show up?

Hollywood loves to think of an audience as something you can tap into, by making the right kind of content. It's not. An audience is something you have to build.

Every risk-based business venture is defined by our efforts to manage the risks involved. In showbusiness, there's always two fundamental risks that we need to account for.
