@smellsofbikes @jbaggs

That project was foiled (har har) in part due to my relocation to California, if I recall.

There's a guy at one of our local beaches who regularly surfs on his hydrofoil surfboard. It is really really cool to watch. He starts sliding down a wave and, like magic, his board rises above the surface with just the foil remaining below. The guy I see seems very skilled -- he pumps the board in a rhythm to keep the speed up and the board out of the water.

@whack and I'm told elsewhere that this thing has a specific use that has nothing to do with bicycles.

Is this a seatpost clamp designed to look like a spiked leather dog collar? Or is this a collar for a tiny dog with a 27.2 mm neck? The owner had a chihuahua in his backpack FWIW. Seen on VTA light rail in San Jose California. #bicycle #bikesjc

We see an SE TRIPEL bicycle hanging vertically from its front wheel,. We can mostly see the rear triangle, the top of the rear wheel (red wheels with about 28 mm tires), and hub, although the view is obscured by another bike. The seatpost clamp is either covered by something that appears to be a very small spiked leather dog collar, or the clamp is designed to look like a spiked leather dog collar.

Viva Calle San Jose today is the Open Streets event in San Jose, California. I took photos. View all of them at flickr.com/photos/bike/albums/

A cat peers through a transparent dome on a "Travel Cat" backpack that is carried by Sera, a woman riding a bicycle on a street on a bright sunny day. The cat seems it does not like being inside of the backpack.

We spent #EarthDay exploring the endangered coastline of #SantaCruz and mapping the proposed West Cliff Recreation Area. We used a bit of bathymetry using @Blender and some powerful collaborative cartography tools from our friends at @felt, plus tons of on-the-ground knowledge from the local activists living in this community that's on the frontline of the #ClimateCrisis. There's this whole subculture of making longtail drift bikes with steel rear wheels so they throw sparks, and I'm really fascinated by it. This is the kind of stuff @bikes and I used to trade back and forth a lot, neat new bike culture finds.

My love language is acts of service.

Water still covers the Guadalupe River Trail under Hwy 101 in San Jose California. I brought a shovel to dig a drainage channel so hopefully the trail will be dry-ish by this evening.

Remember to get a gift for your special someone before Tuesday evening. #BikeSJ #BikeTooter

Wide angle view showing under a highway bridge. To the right of a set of bridge supports is a huge gravel bank at least 50 feet wide. To the left we see a concrete paved trail covered in water. We see the beginning of a trench filled with muddy water from the trail, and a shovel stuck in the gravel at the end of this short, six foot long trench. Only 10 to 20 yards to cross the rest of the gravel bank!

I mostly talk about bikes but I also like #PublicTransportation.

To showcase the environmental benefits of #transit, #SantaCruz Metro introduces buses wrapped with wildlife images by photographer Lanting Frans for their "One Ride at a Time" campaign in partnership with the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History and the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

Slick mud is slick. #JRA #cycling

Looking down from about hip level you see a closeup of my left of my calf / shin with "gravel" cycling shoe attached to the non-drive side pedal on the upstroke. My shin is covered in mud, as is the left side of my shoe.

Some #BikeTooter folk might remember Dr @ianwalker, the psychology professor who donned a wig while cycling to measure motorist passing distances. His most recent trick: studying all of our cognitive biases (even for non-motorists) when driving is mentioned in a survey of attitudes about public health and safety. He talks about it in this thread ...

We have a new study out!

The short version is this: "Car Brain" - the cultural blind spot that makes people apply double standards when they think about driving - is real, measurable and pervasive.

@trouble Yep, city crews do this per MOU with SC Valley Water. I'm glad they do this.

When I used to commute regularly on the Guadalupe River Trail I carried a shovel with me after rainy days. I organized a few cleanup days too for bigger jobs, because we couldn't count on city of San Jose to do it.

A group of volunteers work to clear up a debris filled path under a bridge. Debris include a log and bundles of broken tree limbs.

As of 5 PM Sunday, Lexington Reservoir in Santa Clara County California is seven inches from spillway height. There's no danger of widespread flooding but some parts of the Los Gatos Creek Trail might be a bit muddy tomorrow.

@steffington Did county parks close the gate on the east bank trail there? That side dips a bit lower than the west bank trail to Campbell Ave.

@bethcovitt @weatherwest The workers there say this tree sliding down the hill like that scared the bejesus out of them. There have been a lot of challenges -- fire crews report using chainsaws to cut their way past blocked roads as they respond to calls for help, a county worker was seriously injured when a tree fell on his truck, and of course numerous close calls like the one in this video.
